Where is the Lightroom Classic catalog stored, on the C: drive or another one?

Because one possible cause is the ...previews.lrdata cache file continuing to grow, if that preview cache is on the system startup volume and if high resolution previews are being built on every import.

You need to confirm (double-check) you are importing to the External drive by checking the Destination panel of the Import dialog box. It sounds to me that you also need to duble-check that you are importing using COPY, but that wasn't 100% clear from your description.

So, in the Destination panel I have selected a folder on my D drive (which is the appropriate drive for me). For you it should be the appropriate letter of your external drive.
