Issue with importing files

Lightroom newbie here.  I am struggling with importing images into my lightroom classic library.  I got an initial set of 350 odd images imported, but since then, even if it is just 10 images, the import mechanism freezes then eventually says not responding and to close program or wait.  Waiting never works and eventually I have to close.  Am I missing something simple.  Thanks in advance

I am using Windows 11, most images have been previously worked on and are jpeg files

Lightroom (Lr icon) or Lightroom Classic (LrC icon)? What version NUMBER?

Where are the photos located when you try to do the import? Are you using ADD or COPY or MOVE when you import? Where are you trying to store the images (selected in the Destination panel of the Import dialog box)?
