Issues using SSD (with screenshots)

I bought a Samsung T7 today, to run with my MacBook Air, with the intentions of keeping all my raw photos on the SSD instead of locally on my laptop. I transferred my files to my SSD, and removed them from my computer. When I tried to edit them in LrC after importing from my SSD (the only option I had), the SSD was not usable. All the photos were visible but I couldn't edit them, and there was an exclamation mark in the top right corner of every photo. Is there something I did wrong?
