I hope someone can help please.
I'm using both a laptop and a computer with Lightroom Classic. When I keyword my files on my laptop for example and then sync those files to my computer the keywords are no longer there and vice versa. I would have thought once the keywords were attached to a file they would stay, or am I missing a step somewhere?

How do you 'sync' those files? Lightroom Classic can only sync one catalog to the cloud (and images are synced as smart previews, not originals), but keywords are not synced by Lightroom Classic.

The files are stored on a NAS drive that both the laptop and computer read from. So once the files are keyworded on the laptop then on my main computer I right click on the folder and choose Synchronise folder, Scan for Metadata Updates is checked.

That might work if, on the first computer, you are automatically (or manually) writing the metadata to XMP files on the NAS. Are you doing that?
Anyway, it sounds like you have separate catalogs on each computer. This is the curse of using two catalogs, it requires manual operations in order to keep them "in sync". Better would be one catalog on an external drive which you can move from one computer to another by external disk.

Then the answer is probably simple. Lightroom Classic does not store edits in the files, unless you check the 'Automatically write changes to XMP' option in the Catalog Settings. Sounds like you have not done that (you must do this in both catalogs), and you also have not manually written metadata to files. https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/help/metadata-basics-actions.html
