Lightroom Classic 12.2 causing Windows 11 pc to reboot

When I attempt to use the content aware remove in Lightroom Classic V12.2 after I select the area it causes the pc to instantly reboot every time. This is replicated across both my windows 11 desktop and windows 11 laptop. I have montored CPU temps and they are 50-60 C while this is occuring. Memtest ran through all 4 tests with zero issues. Again both pc's fail on this one feature ... instant reboot. GPU drivers are up to date as is Windows 11. Is this a known issue and a fix coming? If not I have seen several others reporting the exact same issue recently in different forums. Exact same behavior in Camera Raw as well. These are large TIFF files in the 200M range but all other features in Lightroom Classic work fine. Completely built all 1:1 previews and exported entire folders of images as a torture test on both pc's and neither have any issues with any feature other than this new content aware remove tool. One other note ... it only does this on TIFF images ... If I use the tool on the raw file it works fine.

A few inquiries, say for the desktop as a start.

  • What version/build of Windows 11? 21H2/22000? 22H2/22621? Author shows 22H2/22621
  • What GPU make/model: Nvidia RTX3090Ti? (from another post/reply) Author shows RTX 3090Ti
  • What GPU driver version? 528.49 ? Author shows v528.49

A point to make is Windows 11 22H2 and some GPU drivers (NVIDIA comes to mind) had issues back in October, later GPU driver updates, and perhaps Windows updates (not upgrade) may have fixed. If your GPU driver is 528.49  then this is probably not the problem.

Followup, GPU

  • On one of your other post/reply's you stated Nvidia RTX3090Ti Overclocked , By overclock are you referring to the NVIDIA control setting to acelerate for use in LrC (good), or are you talking about a third party GPU accelerator, typically MSI Afterburner (bad)?

And:

  • If you select a smaller image, does it also fail? Author states, yes

I posted the system info below and yes it fails on smaller tiff files as well. Thanks for the youtube link to performance settings ... they helped overall feel a little bit and every bit helps with 151MP images! Didn't impact the issue with the pc restarting however when using that feature. For now I'm just avoiding those features in Lightroom and doing the more advanced editing in Photoshop but I do have to make sure that Lightroom is closed so that Photoshop doesn't have issues as well. Thanks!

Please do the menu command Help > System Info and copy the entire output here. That will let us see precisely which hardware and software versions you're running

# 4, LogiOptions. While that is not the cause of your problem, it is IMO a POS that causes irritation. Unless you have a Craft Keyboard or a mouse with lots of buttons to assign to LrC actions, dump it. That is about the plug-in. You will also have an app/utility running of the same name, you will find it is included in your run at start listing, it is very chatty, unless you want constant checking of mouse/keyboard battery life, or special button assistance, consider not letting it run at startup. Not to be confused with the mouse and keyboard drivers.

The Content Aware on the TIFF photos. Are you trying that before or after using masks?

The after could be an issue.

The TIFFs that I had attempted to use the content aware on certainly had masks applied in lightroom before I then opened the image in Photoshop and saved it as a TIFF from Photoshop back into Lightroom. That was when I attempted to use the content aware feature and it caused the pc to reboot. So the answer is after for sure

Should have asked earlier. The large TIFF files, how are they being created?

  • Via Edit in PS
  • Via export (to TIFF) in LrC
  • Via an external editor
  • Or perhaps (rare) from camera?

What am I thinking?

  • If the TIFF files are via Edit in PS, what happens if you change file type from TIFF to PSD in LrC preferences?
  • If the TIFF files are NOT from a simple export, and the originals are not TIFF, what happens if you accomplish a export (to TIFF) in LrC, then edit  that file?
  • If the TIFF files are from an external editor, then what editor?
  • If the TIFF files are SOC, what camera?Do you like it?

Here is my workflow …

IIQ files from Phase One IQ4-150 camera at 150MP raw
Work with them in Lightroom Classic and will apply both global and local (masked) adjustments there
Then if needed I open the image in Photoshop and do additional work sometimes adding layers and then save the image as a TIFF where I see it in Lightroom again. These TIFFS are anywhere between 200MB and 2GB for some of my Panorama’s. Since the TIFF files are definitely from an edit in PS I'll try saving to a PSD and see if the issue still occurs.

Thanks for the help!!

Hmm, so that brings up an inquiry.

  • Why not accomplish the content aware erase earlier, in LrC before local adjustments. Content aware erase, and spot healing, and spot cloning work better before local adjustments, in fact can be an issue if after adjustments when accomplished in Lrc
  • Or, Why not accomplish the content aware erase/fill while in PS? PS is more capable at that. The photo you are working on at that point has the LrC edits baked in, so edit order in LrC at that point does not matter.

Just trying out the new features to see if they work without going into PS. 🙂 For now I'll just continue to use PS so not a huge issue once I realized the only time it was rebooting my pc was when I was using this feature.

That said it works as expected on my Macbook ... seems more stable there. Its just that my Windows PC is much faster than my Macbook on any batch task or Import/Export.

So now in the very latest Photoshop update  if I use the Object Selection tool in Photoshop that now causes the pc to immediately shut down as well. Didn't do this previously. So now neither Lightroom or Photoshop is stable on Windows. Tried it on a couple of machines now. Very frustrating! Back to my Macbook.
