Lightroom Classic 12.3 slow?

Is anyone else suffering from slow performance since the release of 12.3?

I edit several hundred photos in Lightroom every day.  My newer (i.e. six month) high-end computer is lagging with this version of Lightroom.  It was zippy with previous versions.  Everything else runs quickly on the computer, so I suspect that something with the latest version of Lightroom is the culprit.

In the develop module is where I notice it.  Moving from photo to photo, applying radial fills -- pretty much every editing step is laggy compared to before.  It's tough to evaluate objectively, but in general Lightroom used to keep up to me.  Now it doesn't and it's painful.

My OS and Dell-supplied drivers are up to date.  I was using Nvidia driver 531.41 but based on this thread about slow performance, I just downgraded the Nvidia driver to 516.94.  It seems better, but still slow.

That driver is nearly a year old.  Download the latest Studio driver (531.61) from here:

https://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/204244/en-us/

If that doesn't help, download the latest Game Ready driver (532.03):

https://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/204970/en-us/

Game Ready drivers are not always better.

It's a longstanding buglet that Adobe hasn't prioritized:

Any thoughts about this?

I've downgraded to 12.2.1 and everything is fast again.  There's something problematic about 12.3.

Yes!! 12.3 is way slower on my computer (Mac Studio 2022, Apple M1 Ultra, 128 GB RAM). I had to downgrade to 12.2.1 a few times now because 12.3 is just not usable.

It not much consolation knowing that it's not just me, but it helps.

It was a good suggestion to downgrade to 12.2.1.  I just downgraded to that version and now Lightroom is running at the previous speed again.  Something about 12.3 is unusably slow when dealing with a volume workflow.  It's very interesting that you're seeing the same slowness with the Mac version that I'm seeing on the PC version.

Well, I downgraded to LR 12.2.1 and the previous speed is back.  This points to something about 12.3 being problematic on my machine.

I also noticed that with 12.3, you have to click an image in the filmstrip, you have to click the image itself rather than anywhere with that cell.  That was a real nuisance.

Same issue for me. Lightroom was blazing fast up until the previous update, now it takes 2 to 3 seconds to load every image in the editing panel, a lag not suitable for big volume editing.

That's exactly the type of behavior that I was seeing as well.

Unfortunately I'm using the new Nikon z8 which is not compatible with 12.2.1, so I have no options. editing with smart previews is viable, I'm using that for the time being, but I often need to zoom so I'm back at the start.

Hope to see a fix very soon.

Ah, that's too bad.  It would be helpful for Adobe to acknowledge the issue so we know that it's being addressed.

One common cause of "Lightroom X.x was working great but when I installed Lightroom X.x+1 it was slow but when I revert to X.x it speeds up again" is a bad install.  When there are nebulous, vague or not-widespread complaints of slowness it is good to rule out the install itself.

Clean Lightroom Install Procedure

  1. Close Lightroom
  2. Restart the computer
  3. Use the Adobe Creative Cloud App to uninstall Lightroom
  4. Restart the computer
  5. Install Lightroom via the Creative Cloud App without launching any other programs.
  6. Restart the computer
  7. Launch Lightroom
  8. Wait 5 minutes

If speed doesn't improve after this procedure, reset preferences

This procedure works for both Lightroom Classic and Lightroom Desktop. If you are using Lightroom Desktop it can change the location of your local storage. Please review this setting after resetting preferences.

Reset Procedure:

1. Close Lightroom.

2. Hold down [Alt/Opt]+[Shift] while restarting Lightroom.

3. Overwrite the Preferences when prompted by the dialog.

4. Close Lightroom.

5. Restart Lightroom.

Those two steps will usually weed out the bad installation as a cause.

If after carefully completing those steps you still perceive slowness, it is time to provide very specific information about the nature of the slowness.

I can confirm I uninstalled and reinstalled once with the Adobe cleanup tool, then reset preferences, and Lightroom was behaving slow as previously.

However, I did one more uninstall and reinstall of Lightroom alone as you stated, and now it seems to work very well.

Very strange behaviour and I only put 1-2 hours on the new install so let's see if it holds up! This shouldn't really be necessary but at least I can work well again 🙂

Hi,

I've been through these steps and lightroom is still brutally slow in the develop module. I also changed to a previous version and it was fast again, so it's defintely something to do with the new version. I now have the new NIkon Z8 so I have to use the latest version of lightroom. I can hardly work like this.

My system info is:

LATEST

I used the Clean Lightroom Install Procedure above to upgrade to LrC 13.0.1.  I also installed the latest Dell-recommended GPU driver.  I've edited about 200 photos and so far speeds seem back to normal.

So that's good, but now with this version I'm hampered by this bug:  https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-bugs/p-unable-to-advance-to-the-next-photo/idc-p/14....

Try increasing the cache setting and purging it, worked for me at least

I've done that plenty.  That has not helped.

I have exactly the same issues in Develop Mode.

Infuriating.

What version of Lightroom are you on?

I've stayed on LR 12.2.1 because of this issue with 12.3.  I'm in the middle of my busy season and I don't have time to mess with later versions that slow down my workflow.
