Lightroom Classic 14.0.1 stops responding on launch on macOS. Rebooting macOS, force quitting LrC has not helped.
Comments
I’ve been using LrC for last year successfully. Issue first occurred around 10/10/24 when I was on vacation. Unable to get LrC to boot, I have been using Lr (cloud) since then but need to get back to LrC now.

From reading other crash posts, I opened a Finder window and watched my folder with my LrC catalog files. Appears LrC is stuck in an infinite loop creating and then deleting these files every 1/2 second (for 10 minutes and still going...)
- <catalog name>.lrcat-shm
- <catalog name>.lrcat-wal
I also see a <catalog name>.lrcat.lock file which I believe if present should result in a dialog box to the user but I never see one. After force quit, I moved the *.lock file out of that catalog folder and retried launching LrC, but this did not have any affect - app still stops responding on launch.
Adobe Lightroom app checker could find no issues.

I'm curious why this issue was moved from the bugs to discussion forum. Does it mean that reliable cases of hanging when product us launched are not considered a bug?

The reason is explained at below link. It's is the first post in the Bugs forum.

Got it, thanks for the link Ian.

I just went through this today on my Win 11 machine. I tried several ways to start LrC, including double clicking on the active catalog. Each time I tried it, the process you described would happen. I was able to see what was going on in the catalog folder on a second screen. The only way to stop it was to restart the machine. After a restart, trying to open LrC from the task bar resulted in the start process hanging again trying to open that catalog.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times because that was the only way to get LrC to start at all with a new, empty catalog. The solution finally was after a reinstall, was to open a backup catalog from a few days ago that I had unzipped. That resulted in a normal restart and the desired catalog loading just fine. Fortunately, I had made minimal edits since that particular catalog was backed up. I'm very happy that my normal procedure is to back up LrC every time the program closes.
I don't know for sure, but this seems like a corrupt catalog causing LrC to get stuck upon opening without giving a "corrupt catalog" error message.
BTW, of course I deleted the .lock file after each attempted start.

Hi KR - I chatted with Adobe support for 3 hours yesterday and it was determined that it was likely a catalog corruption issue as LR classic opened fine when using a brand new empty catalog. Note, when LR is stuck in the infinite loop with the WAL and SHM files, you can stop it by ending the task/process.
* On macOS, the activity monitor will show that LR as "not responding" and can be forced to quit.
* On Windows, you should be able to use the task manager to do similar via "end task" on the processes tab I believe.
This is the 2nd time my catalog has been corrupted. Each time, the corruption seemed to occur when I was using my catalog while offline (no internet access). Then next time I loaded the catalog while online, it would somehow be corrupted. I've shared this insight with the Adobe support people.

That's my conclusion, a corrupted catalog. Possibly the first one I have had since starting Lightroom at V2 on MANY different machines through the years. I thought I recall posts on this forum where LrC gave a "Corrupted Catalog" message. That never happened for me in this current issue.
I'm familiar with being able to terminate a program in Task Manager, but in this case, LrC never loaded far enough for it to be listed in Task Manager. I was watching Task Manager and the LrC folder both on my #2 screen as this was going on. Thankfully, it's running fine now 🙂
My backup policy is to always have LrC backup everytime it exits and, I frequently manually copy the .lrcat and helper files to a different drive as additional insurance.

I think its a bad software update. My issue started today. Uninstall/install didn't work. Opening backups has the same issue.
