In a first step you should  try to reset the Lightroom preferences.

https://www.lightroomqueen.com/how-do-i-reset-lightrooms-preferences/

It's recommended to backup your preferences before you reset the preferences to the default settings:

https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/preference-file-and-other-file-locations.html

If this doesn't help switch off the GPU support from the Lightroom preferences and check if that helps to fix the issue.

Go to Lightroom > Preferences > Performance tab > Uncheck "Use Graphics Processor" > Restart Lightroom.

https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/troubleshoot-gpu.html

If Lightroom doesn't start correctly the please see "Solution 2" in the document behind the link below.

Troubleshoot GPU issues | Lightroom Classic (adobe.com)

If it's help see here Troubleshoot GPU issues | Lightroom Classic (adobe.com) and check the different steps.

Is your system up-to-date? Do you have installed all recent updates and patches for the operating system and the device drivers, especially the graphic driver. If you have a NVidia graphic card installed, make sure that you are using the recent Studio version of the driver, not the Game Ready version.

Please provide a copy of your 'System Info'. This can be get from the LrC Help > System Info menu item. There's a copy button in the System Info dialog. Press this button and paste the info into your next forum post.

thank you,

I shall try the suggestions as soon as I can.

I discovered I could start the program provided I created a new, empty catalogue.

When I try to open an existing catalogie, the program gui disappears but the program is still open, though task manager shows it is using zero % CPU, zero % memory and zero % GPU.

Is this actually updating the catalogue and I should leave it for a day or two?

I remember the previous big update required a lot of time for exiting catalogie to update, but I do nto recall the gui vanishing like this.

It depends on the size of the catalog, but it doesn't takes days until finishing.

My catalog has a size of approx. 650MB and contains around 70 000 images. The update took only a few minutes.

Thanks to all who have made suggestions.

I got the program to start as a fresh instal (by deleting the preferences) and have been working on getting my older (13.4) catalogue recognised ("import from an existing catalogue").

The manipulations I have made over the years are still there, it just has a problem finding the original photographs.

I have to go through folder by folder and setting the locations of missing ones which is tedious. But I recall doing the same thing with the previous update (12 to 13).

Do people keep all their files in one folder or something? I put my photos in folders on an external hard drive then import them into lightroom. The location of originals never changes, and the lightroom catalogue is also saved to the same drive, but updated catalogues do not seem to find them.

Could I be doing something wrong? Is it better to have a catlogue on an internal drive for some reason?

I only have 9,500 images by the way, much fewer than yours 😉 so I don't know what my PC is doing to be so slow.

Should not be necessary when you upgrade. Unless somehow the wrong catalog file has been selected. Are you sure the proper catalog has been selected to upgrade?

You can re-connect all the folders in a hierarchy at once by selecting the parent folder in Lightroom Classic's Folder Panel and reconnecting by right-clicking on this parent folder and select Update Folder Location and then selecting the proper location of the parent folder of the photos. BUT YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE TO RECONNECT AFTER UPGRADING, unless something else is wrong.

No! terrible idea.

While it might be better for speed of the Library Module, its not mandatory and many people do not have the catalog file on the internal drive, but rather on an external drive.

so I don't know what my PC is doing to be so slow.

You haven't mentioned slowness before, we need to know what is slow, in detail, be specific. We would need to know the hardware you have, one possible cause is that your hardware is old and slow, but there are many other causes as well.

thanks once again.

I will check I used the right catalogue, and if so I will certainly try the 'root' or parent folder trick. By slow I really only meant lightroom updating was slow. I have a PC with an i9-10900k, RTX4070Ti super and 64 GB RAM, so its not hardware related.

I am very keen to sort this out as I just got a Canon Pixma pro-200 🙂
