Lightroom Classic crashes intermittently when cropping

For the past 6 months or so LR Classic has been crashing on my desktop intermiitently when I crop dng files (which are large, source is a Nikon Z9).  This happens about once per 25 attempts and is not reproducible - i.e. it will crash for an image and then after restarting LR it will work for that same image.

I have the very latest drivers for my graphics card, an RTX6030.  I have done updates for LR and Windows. Nothing helps.  All other operations work fine. E.g. denoising using the graphics card works fine, etc.

Here is the System Info:

My recommendation is to contact nVidia and report the crash. Even though you have the latest driver and a clean install, that does not mean the driver is still at issue.  There is always the possibility the card is defective, but I doubt that.

You should have the Crash Report in your system that you can use to refer to your issue.
I see that you made a request earlier for a Stack Trace. If you cannot find the local crash report,  the Unique Stack ID reported is 70833915

How are you resizing those DNG files?

I do Tools->Crop, then select aspect 16x9, then use the window to resize.

So it crashes when you use the crop tool you mean? This is likely due to a misbehaving GPU driver. The driver you are running appears to be one that was released only a few days ago. I would try reverting to the version right before that. I believe people here recommend the studio driver for GeForce cards and Lightroom, so if you are using the gaming driver that is another thing to try.

This has been happening for about 6 months with a variety of drivers. I keep everything updated in the hopes that something will revert.

Just for clarity, this is a Crop, not a resize. Crop and resize are two different things. The DNG file remains at its original pixel dimensions, unchanged.

Ok crop. The resulting image has a different size and aspect ratio. I'll change the title to refelect it's crop.

We’ve reviewed the email address you use with this forum and find no crash reports in our system.

Did you see a crash dialog?

Do you use a different email address when filling out the crash report?

Was the crash dialog Adobe’s? Microsoft’s?

Lately the crash dialog just shows that it "found a solution" which is a link to an article suggesting I (a) update the graphics driver, or (b) disable the GPU.
In the past, as I recall it has asked if I want to send the dump, and I say yes.

And yes, it is an Adobe crash, not a Windows crash.
When the error occurs, LR hangs for a minute or so, then shows the dialog.

I've reviewed all activity for your email address (deleted from your post) for LrC versions 13.0, 13.0.1, 13.0.2, and 13.1 and found no crash logs.

The next time it crashes, make sure you check the box to include your email, add your email to the crash report, and then screenshot the dialog and attach it here.

The crash report from today indicates a problem with your nVidia card's driver.

Ihave the very latest drivers. I'll do a clean install as GoldingD suggests.

But does Adobe notify NVidia of these problems? If not, can I get the stack trace or other error info to send to NVidia?  If Adobe does notify NVidia, is there a bug I can track on the NVidia side?

Otherwise I'm stuck between a rock (Adobe) and a hard place (NVidia).

So, do you have the line in the crash report that causes Rikk Flohr to states a problem in the GPU driver is indicated?

And does another member have a link to a complete direction on how to flush out all old traces of the NVIDIA driver, then install a fresh new driver. Not just a clean install, but an actual go nuke, get rid of old, then install new procedure?

I assume a google search on:

clean install nvidia gpu driver site:nvidia.com

Will bring up lots of discussions on that. Anyone have a recommendation for the OP?

As far as I know, you cannot resize any photos in Lightroom Classic, except when you export them. Is that when the problem happens?

So issue goes back several GPU drivers, and goes back 6 months, so perhaps back to LrC 12.4?

Ok, the GPU driver, do you remember if during the update, you choose custom install type as to force a clean install? A clean install delete old left over crud (hopefully). You might want to accomplish a do over on the GPU driver if you did not or cannot remember.

Also, NVIDIA provides what they call the Game Ready driver and the Studio driver. Currently for your GPU those are both v551.23. I have no idea if when the version number is the same if they are the same driver. So did you go for the Studio Driver? Recommended for creative non gamer work. (not at my PC just now, to check, but the NVIDIA software on your PC may indicate Game Ready or Studio)

Yes, I use the Studio Driver.
I suspect the problem is in LR and not the driver because I use other graphics capabilities in LR extensively (such as Denoising) and have no problem with those. The problem only occurs when cropping. I'm kinda surpised LR uses the GPU at all for cropping, an operation you wouldn't think requires a GPU.

It has been using GPU for that operation for a very long time. It is used to accelerate the drawing of the view (i.e. so it doesn't stutter like crazy) and is a much simpler operation of course than the AI denoise stuff. Since driver changes and updates don't help I would strongly suspect hardware problems with the card. This is unfortunately also not uncommon and it is not at all strange that this shows up only in one area of use as that might just be the one that uses the part of the card that triggers a crash. Not saying that that is it but this card normally does not have this issue as many people use it and crop happily and this is definitely not something that triggers a crash on any of the machines I use so must be specific to your hardware/software combo and might even be very specific to your copy of the card. It might also be something unexpected like a combination of cropping with HDR editing being enabled on this specific system that triggers it. Very hard to tell from here.

Agree that it's difficult to diagnose! It would be extremely helpful if Adobe provided more tools to troubleshoot failures like this. The problem may well be in the driver or card but as a user I have no recourse for resolving it (other than trying another card (which I've already done!)).  AFAIK, I'm using a common, mainstream card (RTX3060) with the latest software. When a card operation fails, we really need more diagnostic data on the exact nature of the failure so that it could be shared with the driver makers.
