Maybe this is a bug, maybe it's just optimisation limits within the software - IDK.
Anyway, I went through all the adjustment sliders when trying to get to the bottom of unusable performance with the spot healing tool, and only the following sliders have an appreciable impact on performance:
* Highlights
* Shadows
* Clarity
If any of these 3 settings are nonzero, performance *tanks* to unusable levels. If they're zero'd, then you can zip away editing at cheetah speed. Caches, GPU, preview size etc etc make no detectable impact on this - but as soon as you zero SH/Clarity, performance is back to normal.
I appreciate the procedural/stacked nature of edits in LR (And thus the fact that the more adjustments you have applied, the slower one expects it to become) , but I really think there's something very wrong with the compute pipeline if Shadow/Highlight is performance breaking, and Noise Reduction / Lens Correction doesn't have an appreciable impact.
Further the suggestion that one should "Do the spot healing first" is technically correct, but often unworkable. Volume and event photography typically requires you slap a preset on the working set, make global exposure adjustments, then retouch on request / on scrutinised inspection. Flipping that around to retouch minor details *first* is incredibly counterproductive.
I made a detail videoing the tests if anyone cares, though I hold out little hope.
Leaving this here for all the other frustrated users, if your spot heals are lagging, neutralise clarity, shadows, and highlights, and see if it helps.
