Hallo zusammen,

Catalog corruption is another possibility, so try the following: open your catalog folder and move the catalog file (the file with the .lrcat extension) out of this folder. If you now start Lightroom Classic, it won't know where the catalog is and so it should ask you to locate it, or create a new catalog. Try creating a new catalog to see if that makes Lightroom start properly.

Hello Johan, thank you very much! That certainly helps me already.
I renamed the extension of the catalog file so Lightroom can't find the catalog. I didn't want to move the catalog because it is about 770 MB in my case (is that a problem).
Then I was able to start Lightroom normally (with the default catalog). I then named the catalog file .lrcat again and wanted to open it with Lightroom Classic.
Unfortunately, then only a black bar appears on my desktop with the text "Lightroom - Catalog Lightroom Catalog-2-v12.lrcat is opened". But Lightroom does not start again.
Apparently this catalog is corrupted. In fact, my computer crashed several times recently while I was working. How can I repair the catalog? Many greetings, Richard

No, 770MB is not a problem at all. It is actually a small catalog size. My own catalog is about 3.5GB and that is still not very large (200,000 images).

If Lightroom does not offer you to try to repair the catalog, then there is nothing you can do. Did you make catalog backups? If so, then replace the current catalog with a backup copy from before this problem started.

Hello Johan,
now I have been able to solve the problem.
Today I made the latest update to version 12.5. Then I renamed the catalog extension again and started Lightroom. There I was offered a possibility to select a catalog. I renamed my catalog back to .lrcat and loaded it here. After that I was offered to repair the catalog ... that took a while, but now everything is back!!!
Many, many thanks!!!

Good to hear! And if you did not make backups yet, then start today!

What I have to say in the end though....
It is sad for such a well-known and large application that a broken (catalog) file leads to such behavior and one has to intervene manually like this.
From an Adobe product I would have expected that then it would be indicated that the catalog is damaged and a repair would be offered. The behavior shown is not acceptable!
How or where to "bring this up" with Adobe?

You already did bring this up. This is an Adobe forum... It is useless to file a complaint about this, however. Lightroom has many built-in error dialogs, but you cannot expect the application to be able to show you such a dialog in every possible situation that can go wrong. Sometimes a problem locks up the app, so it can't do anything anymore, including telling you why it locked up.
Get ready! An upgraded Adobe Community experience is coming in January.
