Lightroom Classic sync issues

New Here ,
Aug 25, 2023 Aug 25, 2023

Hello to all. I have a desktop at home and want to have the Collection of my best photos with me on the laptop. In LrC at the desktop I created a new Collection, copied in there the photos I wanted synchronised and then synced my laptop. The photos appeared on my laptop but i get an error message that I am synchronising the wrong catalog. The desktop is "Lightroom Catalog-v12" while it asks me to synchronise "Lightroom Catalog". What am I doing wrong? Thank you for your help

I suspect you are also trying to use Lightroom-Classic catalog on the Laptop. Not the suggested way to go!!

Click the [Cancel] button to get out of that dialog.

You do not "Sync" a Lightroom-Classic Catalog on the remote laptop! (If you try you get that warning dialog message.)

Instead you can use Lightroom-Desktop v6.5 (the 'Cloud' version) on the laptop to view and edit the photos you have synced 'up' to the Cloud ecosystem from your desktop at home.

OTOH- if you want to use Lightroom-Classic on the laptop, you need a work-around method to 'Copy' a Catalog of (selected?) photos from the home desktop to the laptop-

MULTIPLE COMPUTERS- How to use (Lightroom Queen)

Regards. My System: Windows-11, Lightroom-Classic 14.2 Photoshop 26.3, ACR 17.2, Lightroom 8.2, Lr-iOS 9.0.1, Bridge 15.0.2, .

Got it, thank you very much! It worked. However I noticed that after accepting to use the desktop's catralog in the laptop when prompted, it somehow did import the desktop pictures. In any case I will use what you suggested.

BTW, wouldn't be much easier if Lightroom could synchronise the smart catalogs? Is this possible?

Thanks again for your help!

There is no such thing as a 'smart catalog'. You are confused with 'smart previews'. Yes, you can also do this in another way, using only Lightroom Classic. What you do in that case is select the images and then export them as a new catalog. Export with smart previews, but not 'negatives'. Copy this exported catalog to your laptop. Now you can view and edit these images on the laptop. When you get back home, start Lightroom Classic on the desktop computer and choose 'Import from another catalog'. Import the catalog from the laptop to merge the edits. You can also import new photos this way (import them on the laptop, then merge them when you get back home).

Yes apologies, meant to say "smart collections". Thanks for the tip!

OK, in that case the answer is negative. Lightroom Classic cannot sync smart collections, only normal collections. There are two plugins however that make this possible (although in end it is still a normal collection that gets synced).

Got it. Many  thanks for you help. I hope in the future Adobe will allow smart collections to be synced which will help a lot. Cheers!

I have the same issue and all I ever get from usesless Adobe is complete B.S.  I'm simply trying to sync a collection from my to the cloud.  That's it.  I have to be honest - Capture One is looking better by the second.
