Lightroom Freezes Whole Computer.

I just got a new computer.  I installed Lightroom Classic CC.  I try and import some files.  But Lightroom and Windows freeze and I have to power cycle to get back control of my computer.  Sometimes I can get to the import process and get one or two files imported before Lightroom freezes, other times, just opening the import window freezes the whole system.

This is my computer Specs:

Alienware Area-51 R5

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-7980XE CPU @ 2.60GHz

RAM: 32.0GB (31.9GB usable)

Windows 10 Pro

Main Drive C: Toshiba SSD 512GB

Data Drive D: 2TB

Display Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti

There are no log files in the Adobe Lightroom log folder.

I have tried turning on and off the graphics card settings.

I have tried saving into different drives.

I have done a system restore to factory settings.

I have checked for updates.

No luck in finding out why this is happening.  Do you have any suggestions?  Every other application I have had on here works.

ClandestineMan  Adobe support did a remote on my computer and changed some file permissions on the Adobe Files and got LR Classic and Photoshop CC to run. They turned off under Performance on LR and PS use the Graphic Card, NO. The computer far exceeds Adobe's hardware requirements for their applications. This still did not fix the problem and the computer would just freeze.

But...

I found a helpful Dell AlienWare Support Tech that had me make changes to the over-clocking settings in the BIOS. Th

System freezing on Windows is almost always a bad video driver or a hardware malfunction somewhere. You need to install (or re-install) the current version of the video driver for your GPU, and run diagnostics checks on the rest of your computer.

It took me a while, but I was able to find the driver information.  I had an old driver installed.  I updated it.  Ran the program again.  Computer Freeze up.  I have tried diagnostic checks a couple of times and nothing is found to be wrong.

OK, so I installed the monitor drivers for the monitors that I have.  rebooted and still have the issue with Lightroom.  It only seems to happen when Lightroom is trying to display images.  So in the import window.  Even though windows is not responding, the lights on my computer are still shifting in color.  My monitors are G-Sync monitors.  Would that make a difference?

I have been on my computer now for 4 hours.  No issues with other applications.  I have used the following applications:  Chrome, Unreal Engine, Visual Studio 2017, and other applications.  No issues.  LIghtroom still crashes my computer.

It's good to have the correct monitor drivers, but the driver that really counts is the driver for your video card in the computer.

Is your computer a desktop or laptop?

Go to the computer manufacturers website for the newest driver. Some laptops make you get the driver from the manufacturer's web site. You may also be able to get the GTX 1080 driver from nvidia.com

My computer is a desktop.  I did go to the Nvidia website and got the latest drivers.  Those new drivers did not help with Lightroom freezing my whole system.

Sometimes Nvidia updates drivers for specific video games and the result can be other programs might not run right.

Sometimes you have to roll back to an older driver.

Before you do that try changing the setting in Edit > Preferences > Performance  for  "Use Graphics Processor".  If it is checked, uncheck it.  Or, the opposite.

Good luck!

I tried that a couple of days ago.  Same results.  Lightroom froze the whole system with the option checked or unchecked.

ok, so I have been working on my computer for over a week now with no issues with any program except for Lightroom.

Here is a partial list of software that I have not had issues with and use on a daily bases on this computer.

  • Adobe After Effects
  • Unreal Engine 4.19
  • NetBeans
  • Unreal Tournament 3
  • Chrome
  • Unity3D
  • Visual Studio 2017
  • Visual Studio Code
  • Android Studio
  • OBS
  • Adobe Acrobat
  • Steam

So, I just tried launching Lightroom again.  When it goes into the import process it freezes the whole computer up.  I had music running and it froze that up and was screeching at me.  I had to kill the power to get the computer back up and running.

Does it only lock up during import? If so, that might actually be a problem with the USB drivers/cables/etc.

So, I moved the files over to the local drive.  I went into import and just going to the directory cause the computer to freeze up.  I didn't even get to the importing part, but the importing view part.  I even tried 3 different memory card readers and several different USB ports to rule those out.

I had an issue with all of Adobe's products.  Lightroom, Photoshop, Premier.  Updating the bios solved the issue for me as stated above.  Now everything works.  Is that what your asking?

I have had everything freeze up on import and have 2x found it to be a faulty USB issue (First time a bad drive, second time a bad USB Card Reader). To eliminate this as a problem, first try copying all of the files from USB to a local disk. Then, disconnect ALL USB drives and import from the local disk. When I had the faulty disk drive, it wasn't even a drive that I was using for Lr or storage that caused the issue which is why I recommend removing all USB drives during the import to troubleshoot.

It truly is irrelevant that other software doesn't cause this problem.

If it isn't the video card drivers, then sometimes locking up during import can be caused by the CPU overheating, and this is usually caused by a fan malfunctioning. Importing puts a lot of stress on the CPU, generating a lot of heat, and if the fans aren't running, then overheating happens and the  computer locks up or shuts down.

The reason I listed other software was to show that I am running more intensive applications with no issues.

I don't think the CPU is overheating.  I ran a CPU temp gauge and it was at normal levels while I was using Lightroom up to the freeze of the system.  I ran the temp gauge while using other applications and the temp got hotter with those applications.

All 5 fans on the system are running fine and the temp is within the normal range of the recommended temps.  None of the fans are running hard.

This freezing issue is 100% reproducible.  It happens at the same exact place whether the computer just started or has been on for days.

I have the same issue. All drivers are updated. Have no issue with any other program, including PS, but LR freezes the computer. It started happening two LR versions ago. I rolled back to the older LR version and problem resolved.

BTW, I had Adobe remote control people going through my computer for hours. They found nothing and could not solve it

Thanks for the link.  I gave that a try and did not work.

So I reset the Lightroom settings based on the article.

I deleted the files that the link said to delete.

I reset the Lightroom settings again.

Computer Freezes still.  At one point the whole computer would freeze seconds after Lightroom started.  I didn't even get a chance to do anything with it.

Was worth a try. Never seen behavior like you describe. No idea what could

cause it but some hardware problem that somehow only Lightroom triggers.

I thought I would give the other Lightroom application a try and while just clicking around the images, my whole computer froze up.  So, it looks like both applications cause the computer to freeze up.  I am going to try and use Photoshop and see how that works with my computer.
