Lightroom imports my Sony A57 RAW photos cropped

Heya,

I've been trying to sort this out for the last couple of hours. I'm guessing my Sony A57 had an in camera crop to the images. When I transfer them to my computer I can see the full image with no crop when previewing, but as soon as I import it to Lightroom, it's the cropped version (so I assume the camera writes metadata to the ARW file). I tried opening the images in Sony's 'Imaging Edge Desktop' software, and they open fine, uncropped. Tried a save as of the ARW file and re-importing to lightroom, but the images are still imported cropped. I also tried to crop the image in Sony's software a tiny bit while keeping the 2:3 Aspect ratio, but that didn't work either.

I did try going to the cropped section in lightroom and clicking on 'Original' as suggested by a lot of people on here, but it doesn't work on old cameras. As far as I can see, any camera that supports versions before Camera Raw 7.2 and Lightroom (Classic) 4.2 can't do that solution.

I also tried the old DNG Recover Edge plug-in but that didn't work either.

I'm out of ideas. I tried so many things. The images are full size when previewing and editing in sony's software, but cropped in lightroom. Any ideas?

Thanks! 🙂

This is how it currently looks. I saw if I click the override global settings for specific cameras I can choose between Cannon EOS 600D, Sony A7III and the Sony A57 which are all cameras I've shot with in the past. So I assume I need to change this to Sony A57, but what else do I need to do on that window? Thank you so much! 🙂

Thanks for your answer! I did have a read through it, but no matter which Global setting I choose from the 2, it doesn't sort the crop issue. Even with Adobe Default, it does not override the Sony in camera 9:16 crop on the RAW image...

On the image that is misbehaving, in the develop module, bottom right panel, check what process version is in use.. Current would be 6. An old process version would take you back to older versions of LrC and what could be modified, and how.

Do you still have that camera?

Can you look at the in camera settings for image size, take a new photo, and see what occurs.

Also can you clarify if known (about existing issue)

  • In camera image size (or what you think it was) (3:2, 16:9 ???)
  • In Camera image size when first seen in previews or other software that can show the embedded JPEG.
  • Post LrC preview creation, perceived image size.

And can you post an example, perhaps in DropBox

Have you tried the crop tool in LrC on the problem images to see if there is image available outside the crop tool limits?
