Lightroom prevents Photoshop and Nik Effects 7 from opening when exporting images

When I try to export an image from Lightroom Classic to Photoshop or Nik Effects 7 the app will not open until I close Lightroom.  This just started happening a few days before the latest update so I updated everything hopeing that would fix the problem.  It did not.  I have not had any issues until just a few days ago.  Also Lightroom runs dog slow loading and switching images.  Any suggestions?

have you considered resetting the LrC preferences file? Not the preferences, but the preference file. The preference file can get corrupted leading to buggy behavior. Not opening PS,  is one, not opening an external editor is another. Lots of odd behavior.

or Nik Effects 7

I just tested NIK Color Efex on my rig. BUT, a big oops, did I select v6 or v7.??? my bad

That questionable test brings up a few points

  • Are the NIK 6 plug-ins still listed on your rig for Edit In? After my first failed test, after updating NIK, I noticed, oops, still have v6 listed in Edit In. (see pic below)
  • If the NIK 6 still shows up in LrC Edit in, is the actual NIK 6 still installed? If the plug-in is listed in Edit In, but the actual app is removed, LrC will happily create the copy, then do nothing (including no error message, thank you not Adobe)
  • Did you accidentally select v6, not V7. I suspect that is what I did.
  • Is your NIK 7 the latest version, Bring up any NIK 7 app, like Color Efex, and see if it informs you of an update.

Followup/Correction

After posting, I was curious to make sure that NIK 6 was actually removed, dang if it NIK 6 still existed. So I restarted, logged in as ADMIN, and removed NIK 6. Then restarted, logged in as local, and looked at LrC Edit In, again, NIK 6 still shows up. And choosing NK 6 still fails the same way.

Do you have NIK7, perhaps that corrects an issue??

right now I have both Nik 6 and 7 fully loaded.   The problem started while I was using Nik 6 and I upgraded hopeing that would fix the problem.  It did not.

What if PS is already open before the attempt in LrC to Edit In PS?

And yes, while that may be a workaround, it is not correct.

Following are a couple of links about that:

Read the links carefully. Doing this can/will cause preferences to revert to defaults (I think the articles mention that and mention a caution)

PS also has a preference file, but is not normally an issue.

Speaking of PS not loading. A couple of versions back, some members had that issue. The solution was as follows:

  1. Remove PS
  2. Reinstall PS
  3. If that did not work, Remove LrC and PS
  4. Reinstall PS first (very important)
  5. Then reinstall LrC

Reseting the preference file did the trick.  Thank you for your help.

I had the same problem and reset the preference file.  However, it will not work until I close Lightroom

@esanford1 Please describe more detailed.

What do you try exactly?

Do you get an error message?

Do you tried a reinstallation of Photoshop and if necessary also of Lightroom as @GoldingD wrote in a former post?

Please provide also a copy of your 'System Info'. This can be get from the LrC Help > System Info menu item. There's a copy button in the System Info dialog. Press this button and paste the info into your next forum post.
