Lightroom uses all memory during sync

Hi

When syncing Lightroom CC it ends up stalling with around 430 images to go and - after a period - my Mac warns me that I have insufficient memory, Lightroom stalls and I have to force shut down. Checking the activity monitor something strange is happening: Before reaching the last 430 images, the memory usage is around 4 GB, but then it slowly starts creeping upwards until it reaches the max 8 GB that I have. And it is all caused  by Lightroom (I run no other programs at the same time).

I have tried resetting preferences, deleting Sync.lrdata file and going back to an older catalogue. None of them resolved the issue.

Other users seem to have issue caused by them using Dropbox etc. I am using none of those.

I use a MacBook Pro 2.6 GHz, 8 GB RAM, OS X 10.11.6

Any ideas?

Thanks

Peter

I use LR Classic on A iMac with High Sierra without having this problem.

But then I don't sync collections using the iMac. I do do that from my Windows PC and haven't seen this problem there either.

So it is Machine Specific.

I opened a ticket in Adobe Support. I don't think you can call Support. After some chats and mails they decided to call me.

***So this is great. Bad just got worse. I have been using Lightroom CC as a workaround for this issue with Classic since the issue began and it's been satisfactory as an alternative until now. Get this.. I open up Lightroom CC yesterday to find ALL of my albums gone. GONE. Yes, every single one of my 72 albums of diligently organized edits is completely wiped from Lightroom CC, web version, desktop version, iPad, mobile, all of them. My photos are still there but all of the albums are gone. ???!!!!!! To add to that, Adobe called me on Friday asking me for my full catalog file saying they needed additional info???? I don't understand how at this point this has not been escalated to at least where I can deal with ONE person and not have to get the tech support farm when I get a call back. These are mission critical problems integral to professionals being able to use Lightroom in any form and Adobe is failing miserably to show that they can stand behind their cloud services.

This is exhausting. Now my workaround is XXXX too. This is just a total disaster. At this point I can say I don't think they have any idea what is going on themselves.

I have had this same issue since late September 2018 (not syncing and running up memory and crashing with not update to mobile)  Contacted Adobe Customer Service through chats who kept giving me same answer (is your version up to date), then I asked them to solve problem to which they set up three scheduled phone calls, including one at 11:30 pm and 8:30 am on weekends and then failed to even call. Adobe does not care and does not seem to care to fix this systemic problem as it just started all of a sudden (syncing just fine and then one day not).

Still the same even with last updates & co. I've start to tweet Adobe with reference to this topic (found messages @ngcreation) : we should all do the same, in public space. We have chosen their solutions, integrate it to our workflows, pay every month for this, with cloud services... For some of us like me, this is our working tool. Adobe not answering starting to be a real mess. Sahil.Chawla please said something prouve us Adobe have a little care for us.

Hi,

I’ve been having the same issue with lightroom classic during September with previous 7.x version and now same problem with version 8. When syncing photos, it runs for a period until the program becomes unresponsive.  I’ve tried leaving it overnight, pausing and restarting the sync. Previously when sync has been stuck on a handful of photos I’ve deleted the sync.lrdata, which is a refresh of the sync. But this hasn’t helped this time.  Its got some crazy number of photos to sync

It slowly consumes all the available memory until program becomes unresponsive and locks. It evens commits double the available memory in the PC! I can’t sync any changes I’ve made on the mobile device as it’s stuck in this loop.

Please help Adobe

Hi, I have the same problem. I spent a long time in Adobe support chat trying to fix it, but got no diagnose and no solution. I use the last version of Lr Classic CC, purged caches, rebuilt previews, increased space for camera raw, etc. etc. I ahve tried everything, but Lr keeps eating up all available memory until it become useless and so does my iMac.

Adobe, i think you clearly have a RAM management bug here. Come on, give us some responses!

What I'm forced to do, if I have Sync occurring, is to run Task Manager (WIndows 10) with the Memory Pane open in a separate window, monitoring the memory usage graph.   The curve slowly edges upward towards 100% usage while syncing.  When it gets to nearly 100% usage, I completely shut down Lightroom 8.0 and wait for the memory curve to come back down to normal (about five minutes), then restart Lightroom.

Memory overflow does not happen if I'm not syncing.

This at least prevents my computer locking up.

BUT WHAT THE HECK.  THIS IS NOT WHAT WE'RE PAYING FOR!

If it was as simple as monitoring the sync and shutting the app down and restarting until it completed that would be fine.

But I have caught up multiple times and each time:

  • The next time I restart it tries to re-sync a thousand or more pictures (10-20%).  It changes each time and shows them as "sync errors" until it catches up
  • And more importantly, changes I am making on my local library and changes I am making on the mobile copies are not syncing to each other anymore even once the sync is caught up and complete.

This both renders the mobile apps useless and the memory link is making it impossible to use the local app too.

How do we get support?

I have the same issue. After having to revert to a backup catalog since my main catalog suddenly was missing half of my library, it had me reset the sync data and now it never completes and uses up all of my system memory. In fact, Classic is virtually useless unless I launch and immediately pause the sync. It has been happening before the latest update. I have a large library of 84000 photos and videos.

While Adobe is wasting time implementing crappy, half-working nonsense things like face detection, major issues like this still persist that make it virtually unusable for me. This may finally force me off Lightroom if they can't fix it soon. My contract is up in January and will have to make a decision if I want to waste another year on dealing with this problem.

Update on this..

I spent, no exaggeration 2hrs and 45 mins on the phone with tech support on Friday and was not able to get a solution before the person's shift was over and they had to leave. They said they would escalate the problem to a higher level of support and that I would get a call back today.

What we tried: Complete uninstall/reinstall of Lightroom and Creative Cloud desktop app, rebuilding sync database, deleting preferences, sync file, checking in multiple places for sync errors and conflicts and a long process of individually adding read/write permissions to all users on my machines for any Adobe folders the system is using.

So far NOTHING HAS WORKED. I thought I would still be able to use Lightroom Classic if I turned off sync but the performance was still incredibly too slow to work with. Lightroom Classic is now completely unusable. As a workaround I had to import my latest work to Lightroom CC and completely abandon Lightroom Classic. So now I have to use Lightroom CC with limited functionality and will have to deal with the other issues of duplicates and conflicts from having the originals in Lightroom Classic and a mobile collection with the same files created in CC. UGGHHHH

Same problem; same result.

I've had to switch to Lightroom CC from Lightroom Classic as they've engineered Lightroom Classic into an unusable app.

You would think that a company of the size of Adobe, with their enormous software expertise, would not release a product that hangs a computer by not releasing memory.  This is a very basic issue unworthy of Adobe. Leo

I decided to delete all of the synced data and start over.  So far that seems to work.

Lucky for me I only use the mobile apps for my own personal use to edit and rate pictures.  I do not share them with anyone there.  So starting over was better than spending any more of the many many hours I have already spent trying to resolve this issue.

Thanks.

Resetting Sync Data and Optimizing Catalog didn't help me. It did help for the first time but after I launched Lightroom CC Classic again, after a few launches the problem is there again.

Correct.  It didn't help me either. Every time I restarted the application the problem would come back.

So I DELETED All Synced Data.  Which deletes everything uploaded to the Creative Cloud and started over.

Yes.  I only resynced my most current collection because that is the one I am working on.  I will sync more soon.  But the issues are gone for now at least.

BUT - this deletes all pictures and albums from the cloud library.  So if you use that to share albums etc. you will lose all of that.  For me that was not a concern as I use other sharing services.   I only use this for my own workflow to ease the review and editing process.

I  made a test in my new computer, I created a new Catalogue, with the sync in OFF, I added only 130 pictures inside the new catalogue, but I activated the option "Address Lookup" and LR CC Classic used 8GB RAM.

For me the problems started with last edition of LR CC Classic. I updated the Adobe software  with Creative Cloud App.

Go to Preferences>>Lightroom Sync tab.  Click the "Delete All Synced Data" button.  It will take you to your online account to confirm.

Although everything local is preserved it will delete everything synced to online or not synced back to local.

I'm recovering the original pics from LR CC, and I created new Catalogue in LR CC Classic, I disabled the GPU aceleration in LR CC and LR CC Classic, Now I can import the pictures in my new Catalogue, I can reveal the raw photos, the memory is normal and the CPU same situation. The search of location and detection of face was activated and now are working fine

Pending: recovery all pictures from LR CC and remove them all from LR CC, the last, when LR CC catalogue will empty, I will activate the sync with LR CC classic.

I'm Using the last version 8
