Looking at your screenshot, I suspect you're not using the latest version of the Creative Cloud Application, and /or the 'Show Older Apps' isn't enabled.

So, you'll first need to check/update the version number of the CC App. On Windows, the latest version is 5.9.1.377. The top two screenshots in below series shows you how to access the version number.

The third screenshot shows you where to find the preference for keeping the Adobe CC App up to date.

The fourth screenshot shows you where

Typically, issues with masking in LrC are due to out of date GPU driver or the system/GPU not meeting the minimum system requirements. Therefore, best you check on NVIDIA site whether your GPU driver, etc is up to date. If it is, then please see this linked document regarding minium system requirements https://helpx.adobe.com/uk/lightroom-classic/system-requirements.html

and the answer given in this linked thread

https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-discussions/p-people-masking-error-dialog-on-system...

Does above help explain why you're having an issue with masking?

"lightroom crashes when selecting AI mask ...

Dedicated GPU memory used by Lightroom: 472.3MB / 2008.5MB (23%)
DirectX: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M (31.0.15.2756)

Initial State: GPU Disconnected"

You've got the latest Nvidia driver installed (527.56).

You've got the minimum required amount of GPU memory (2 GB) for using People masking, thought that minimum is a guideline rather than a hard threshold.   To see if People masking is causing the problem, go to Masking and collapse the People section (if you can before LR hangs):

johnrellis_0-1672436731154.png

That will stop LR from trying to automatically create People masks.

Your graphics hardware is 7 years old, which is relatively old.  There is some evidence that Nvidia, AMD, and Intel aren't fixing bugs in their drivers for their older hardware, so updating graphics drivers may not have any effect.

Unfortunately, AI masking weirdly doesn't obey the setting of Preferences > Performance > Use Graphics Processor:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-ideas/p-ai-masking-should-obey-preferences-gt-perfo...

I think you have a laptop, and if so, then your only option is to buy a new computer or buy an EGPU.
