LR Classic v13 basic operations very sluggish on Mac Studio

Since updating to LR v13 on my M1 max Mac Studio (Sonoma 14.1.2), basic operations such as changing Color Labels and Stacking have become very slow/laggy and there is a great deal of disk activity occurring a lot of the time.

I have not changed the configuration at all (Catalog on internal SSD and image files on external hard drive) and I have plenty of free space on the relevant disks.

The latest 13.0.2 has not improved the situation.

What has happened and is there a fix?

Is this catalog on your main hard drive or a separate one? Perhaps an external one? If on the main drive, do you have a external one to move the catalog to, and then see if all that hard drive activity continues.

Thanks for the helpful hints and advice.

Although I don't understand why, it appears that having "Automatically write changes into XMP" was the culprit - by unchecking this, the performance has improved significantly.....
