LR denoise AI not reading my A7R5 RAW file

So, if the new LR update with the AI denoise is supposed to read RAW files, why wont mine read files from my Sony A7R5? It tells me it is not currently compatible with this file and I need to manually denoise the image.... all apps are updated....

Are you using Sony "L', 'M' or 'S' raw?

That's compressed raw. Not sure if that works. Try uncompressed.

Just as another data point, which may or may not be useful, I shoot exlusively in Canon's C-RAW compressed format, and Denoise AI has no problem whatsoever with those files.

So "compressed" isn't intrinsically a problem.

That's probably right. Then I don't know; no problems here.

L, M and S are all special Sony files types that may not 'yet' be supported by Camera Raw, at least that was the case with previous models such as A7 IV.

Canon C-Raw is a Bayer type file, hence being supported.

I tried one uncompressed .arw and one compressed L .arw, and they both denoise normally, both a7r v.

(I normally convert to DNG, in which case I suppose it's moot).

Does the difference in compatibility with AI Denoise have to do whether the type of raw compression being used requires demosaicing? Do the lossless raw compression methods not demosaic and the lossy ones do?

Could be, Conrad - Canon's C-RAW is nominally lossy, works fine in Denoise, and AFAIK it's compressed but not demosaiced.

As I just said, I tried it and it works. Lossless compressed raw file from a7r v, same camera s the OP, works perfectly in Denoise.

So whatever problem the OP has, this isn't it.

I read your earlier comment as you having converted them to DNG first:

"(I normally convert to DNG, in which case I suppose it's moot)."

Is that not what you meant? I'm just struggling to grasp the relevance of the comment otherwise.

Ok, sorry, I should have been clearer. In this case, when testing, I did not convert to DNG. I tested on one compressed .ARW and one uncompressed .ARW.

I mentioned DNG just as a way of explaining why I didn't have that test result ready right away, given that I have the camera. I had to change some camera and Lightroom settings first, and make a couple of test files.

So boiling down - I can not reproduce the OPs failure to run Denoise. It works here with the same parameters and settings and the same camera.

Yep, I get that Ian - I'm just flagging up that "compressed = problem" isn't inherently the case.

I am having the same issue. I shoot Medium RAW for the wedding I just did knowing that I was going to use the Denoise in LRC for the higher ISO captures. I originally imported as standard Sony RAW files when I noticed it said "Not Compatible with this photo format."

So I then removed photos from LR and re imported them and converted to .DNG hoping that was the issue. But it is still giving me the same error.  Kind of annoying, I don't use the 61 MP for weddings as there is no point to me in such large files.  But if I want to Denoise them, I have to deal with massive file sizes just to do it. Seems kinda stupid.

I just imported the A7IV files which I shoot normal full size compressed and Denoise works perfectly fine. So it definitely seems to be an issue with the "Lossless Compressed" files at least with the A7RV.

Again, works here on a7r V lossless compressed .arw (see above). Whatever the problem is, that's not it.

Yes, as I wrote above "L, M and S are all special Sony files types that may not 'yet' be supported by Camera Raw, at least that was the case with previous models such as A7 IV." Therefore, until Adobe provide 'full' support for these modes in A7RV you'll need to use the  full sized files.

Note, the original question was compressed L (full size) which works.

M and S may not and probably won't.

Just tested lossless compressed M, and that does not work.

Lossless compressed L works, and, obviously, uncompressed.

So summing up, if you have an a7r V, and want to use Denoise, you have to shoot full size files. Either uncompressed, or compressed L.

I just updated to the latest LR CLassic version 13.3.1  Camera Raw 16.3.1 and this problem still persists. But your article was helpful. So all in all what works from A7RV: L, Compressed, Uncompressed RAW. What does not work is S, M RAW.

I dunno why Adobe would not get these supported.  A bit of disappointment as I have to shoot weddings in higher format for later denoise and waste the memory card.
