LR sync'ing + previews not created

Hi guys,

1. I just downloded my latest images from my SD card and at the end it turns out previews were not created. Is that critical?

2. I constantly get these messages about images being sync'ed or not - especially when I delete. What's that about and ... is sync'ing critical?

Thank you.

We assume you are using Lightroom-Classic (being in the 'Classic' forum.)

What folder location on a hard-drive are you "downloading" to?

Show us a screen-clip of your import screen and the -'no previews were created' message

Not "critical", but problematic if you do not see thumbnails in the Library grid after importing.

"Sync'ed messages"- again, a screen-clip, or exact word-for-word copy of the messages.

Deleting from where?

There are several types of "Sync"-  Edits, New files in folders, Cloud. Which sync are you referring to?

So, more detailed information please to help someone suggest answers.

Hi Rob. Thank you for your thoughtful response.

Interestingly, I got thumnails.  Can previews be created now (and to what effect)? Baffling.

Sync'ing here I believe is to the Cloud. please see attached.

Regarding the original alert messages ... uh ... they've by now blended with the digital ether. Sorry about that.

I'm not sure how useful all of this is in helping you formulate a coherent response. Sorry again.

Now if you are using Lightroom-Classic with local existing photo files on a hard-drive, then syncing with the Cloud is not necessary.

LrC was not originally designed to 'Sync' with the Cloud, so there are limitations.

And building Smart Previews is also not necessary if working 'locally'. So the big question is- why are you building Smart Previews?

You first need to know that your photos have imported to the Catalog library successfully, and that they are not shown as 'Missing'.

You need to see the normal Previews (Minimal, Standard, 1:1) that appear when you have imported files.

I see you have 1270 images "pending" in the sync dialog?  What steps have you taken for this to happen?

Show us a screen-clip of the full screen UI showing the Library Mode in Grid View with visible thumbnails.

Asked for?  It helps.

You appear to have photos successfully in the catalog,

Some have been edited- the badges indicate Keywording, Cropping, Develop edits, But NOT in a Collection that can be 'synced'.

So again - Why are you (manually) trying to create Smart Previews?- For what purpose?

SMART PREVIEWS- WHY?

So back to your first post in this thread-

1. ...... previews were not created. Is that critical?

They WERE created! You show them in the screen-clip.

2. I constantly get these messages about images being sync'ed or not - especially when I delete. What's that about and ... is sync'ing critical?

Screen-clip the message so we can see the exact wording.

And do you have Lightroom on any mobile devices? iPhone, iPad, Android? Or Lightroom v6.4 on the Mac desktop?

Why? When thet first came out I thought of leaving external drives behind when I travelled - and they just get created automatically/

I reality, without the drives, all I get is an alert asking me what to open when I click on LR in my dock. So I'm not sure how to get to the Smart Previews. Makes me feel like a photographic version of a nouveau riche person - a person who owns top of the line equipment but does not know what the shutter release is for 😞

"I thought of leaving external drives behind when I travelled "

Yes, one reason to use Smart Previews, IF your original photos are on the external drives, AND your Catalog is on the internal drive of the (laptop?) computer.

There is no "getting to the Smart Previews", they 'travel' with the catalog as well as the regular previews in a cache folder {.....SmartPreviews.lrdata) and are controlled by the Catalog (.....lrcat).   So you would see files like these on the internal laptop computer-

2023-06-26 06_54_09-Roberts Lightroom Catalog.jpg

You must have the original camera files available (on a connected hard-drive) for LrC to be able to create the Smart Previews.

You cannot create Smart Previews if the original files are not available to LrC.

"alert asking me what to open when I click on LR in my dock"

Screen-clips please. What is the "alert"?  And is the dock icon for Lightroom or Lightroom-Classic?
