There's an outstanding bug that affects mostly Windows users but some Mac users: If you exit LR from within the Map module, it won't work the next time you start LR.  So if this happens to you again, go to the Library module and then exit and restart LR:

You may have encountered another issue with Map (it can be pretty flakey), but worth a try.
