Masking Tool

Hi, I am having trouble with the masking tool in Lightroom Classic installed on my Windows Laptop. I have used it extensively in the past but now when iIclick on the masking tool the box flashes up and then disappears. I don't know why it wouldn't be working as I am not doing anything differently. Any ideas would be very appreciated.

Try resetting the preferences of Lightroom Classic:  How to reset Lightroom Classic preferences (adobe.com)

It's recommended to backup your preferences before you reset the preferences to the default settings:

Thanks  That has fixed half the pronlem  I reset the preferences and now  i can select the sky or use a brush or linear gradient but it wont determine the subject at all  I have tried a few different photos - mainly a bird with a clear background and it just disappears when i select subject
