Multiple files in created in catelogue

I open Lightroom today and discoverd that I have multiple files of the same image (DNG). Most of them are in staks fo 11. This across multiple folders of images. A folder of 50 or so images now contain over 3000 images. Has any one seen this before? Thoughts on why or how this happen.

Does your operating system show the same multiple files of the same DNG?

Yes it does.

I went through the files and there is only one copy of each of the images so I am guessing it is a software issue.
