New Import adding old photos when 'New' is selected

I started LR up and went to import new photos from a folder to my catalog, but instead of just bringing in the new ones, it has auto-selected 7850 photos, many of which are several years old, and still exist in the Catalog elsewhere... please help me figure out how to continue using the smart selection feature and also how to deselect the thousands of photos I don't want brought in for a second time (which would presumably overwrite my old edits?).

• Did you have the "Don't import Suspected Duplicates" option selected?
