original photo missing from external hard drive

Have just recently put all my images onto external hard drives, when i take images, i load them to my external hard drive, then open them in Lightroom and go on to do some more edits in photoshop and save an edited copy from there, however all the images i import to lightroom dissappear from my external harddrive. i would like to alwasy keep an untouched original on my hard drive. what am i doing wrong and where are the original images? thanks
