Adobe has published this.

If your using an older graphics card or driver, GPU functionality in Photoshop may be limited or not supported.

Intel HD Graphic 520  is from  2015 five years old and I can not find recent drivers for it. Its benchmark 862 well below the 2000 Adobe suggest you consider. Post your result form Photoshop menu Help>GPU Compatibility... .

Same problem here.

Using Windows 10 with AMD 5600XT, up to date drivers.

Problem comming randomly, once it happends, the feature is not able to work until... a restart of the application.

Please post your System Information as Lightroom Classic (LrC) reports it. In LrC click on Help, then System Info, then Copy. Paste that information into a reply. Please present all information from first line down to and including Plug-in Info. Info after Plug-in info can be cut as that is just so much dead space to us non-Techs.

I have the same problem trying to select subject in Lightropom - it fails every time. Yet if I edit the photo in Photoshop and use the Photoshop select subject, it works very well. This would impoy that it is not the graphics card that is the cause of the problem but the way Adobe has implemented select subject in Lightroom.

Many people have reported that updating to the latest graphics driver has fixed the issue, so at least in their cases, the problem was with older drivers (many years old, in some cases).  LR and PS have different implementations of Select Subject, and it could well be that LR's implementation trips over driver bugs that PS doesn't.

 

Try updating your graphics driver following the precise instructions in this article:

If that doesn't help, please copy/paste here the entire contents of the LR menu command Help > System Info -- that will let Adobe know the precise versions of software and graphics drivers you're running.

DirectX: AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT (30.0.13025.5005)

 

The Radeon site shows a newer driver version (30.0.14011.3017):

https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/release-notes/rn-rad-win-21-12-1  

 

Perhaps updating to that will help.

What do you mean exactly with select topic?

"select sky"works perfect,  but the second option "select subject" ( for instance a photo with an obvius subject as a tree or person) results in "somethings gone wrong, unexpected failure" on all the photos i've tried.

i use windows 10 Home(20H2), LightroomClassic 11, DESKTOP-R5DUFF6, Intel-i5, RAM16GB, 64bits

Deactivating the graphics processor (GPU) won't help this problem, since Select Subject/Sky doesn't pay attention to that setting (it should).  

 

Many people have reported that updating to the latest graphics driver has fixed the issue, so at least in their cases, the problem was with older drivers (many years old, in some cases).  Try updating your graphics driver following the precise instructions in this article:

https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/troubleshoot-gpu.html#solution-4

 

If that doesn't help, please copy/paste here the entire contents of the LR menu command Help > System Info -- that will let Adobe know the precise versions of software and graphics drivers you're running.

I updated my graphics driver as suggested, tested the new selection tools and it worked - for awhile. BUT NOW it's not working again. I'm so disgusted with this; Adobe, are you listening? At least let us know you are working on a solution !!!
