Performance degrades but restores after a restart

I have been experiencing this problem for a while, probably years. I wasn't very seriously processing  a lot of photos until now, and I just lived with this problem. But now that I am, I can't really tolerate the issue anymore.

The problem is that after some apparently random amount of time, from hours, to days, to even weeks, LRc becomes incredibly slow. It does not matter if I close and restart LRc. It remains very slow.

I ran into the issue again yesterday. It would take about 5 seconds to open an image when double clicking on it, 3 seconds to scroll down one line in grid mode, and 13 seconds from the time I click Edit / Preferences, and when the dialog actually shows up.

I created a brand new, empty catalog, and restarted LRc. The Edit / Preferences taking 13 seconds issue remained.

Finally, I rebooted the machine , and all the performance issues disappeared.

I'm really keen to finding out what is causing this. Other Windows applications are not affected by this problem, only LRc.

My PC is running Windows 10 22H2. It's up to date on OS patches and GPU drivers.

It's a desktop I buitl myself custom, just like every PC I have owned for the last 32 years.

Specs are :

Asus Prime X570 Pro motherboard

AMD 5950X CPU

64GB of DDR4-3600 RAM

nVidia GTX 3060 Ti GPU

LSI SAS2 2308 disk controller

Aquantia AQC-107 10 Gbps NIC

TI Firewire controller

Hauppauge HVR-1265 capture card

Crucial P5 Plus 2TB NVMe boot drive

8 x Samsung 860 SATA SSD (striped)

4 Blu-ray drives

Dual SATA hotswap bay

USB UHS-II SD card reader / 3.0 hub

Monitors :

2 x LG 32UD59-B 4K monitors (running with DisplayPort)

1 x Asus PB328 HD monitor (with HDMI)

The system is on KVM switch, with the HD monitor being the "V" part.

There are other devices externally, mainly USB and Firewire, but I don't think they are relevant.

Please post your System Information as Lightroom Classic (LrC) reports it. In LrC click on Help, then System Info, then Copy. Paste that information into a reply. Please present all information from first line down to and including Plug-in Info. Info after Plug-in info can be cut out as that is just so much dead space to us non-Techs and it takes up vast amounts of scroll space making the reply less readable and less likely that others will bother with your post.

I alternate between using one or two monitors with LRc. Most of the time, it's just the one. I have other apps on the other screens.

I have the 3 monitors setup in horizontal mode, side by side. The left one is LG 32" 4K , center one is LG 32" 4K (set as primary in Windows) and right one is Asus 23" HD.

The two 4K monitors are using DisplayPort. I don't think i have ever moved the LRc window onto the smaller 23" HD monitor.

When I ran into the problem on Saturday, I had 2 monitors enabled in LRc. I disabled the second one as a test, but it did not make any difference to the performance issue. Only a reboot fixed it. It hasn't happened again yet, but I'm sure it will. I normally don't reboot the machine. I put it to sleep when I don't use it. Power management normally turns off the screens at 5 minutes, and the machine goes to suspend to RAM at 15 minutes.

It just happened again. I had been using the "People" module (face recognition) for hours, on a relatively small catalog of about 2700 photos. At some point, LRc became unbearably slow. I restarted it, and it did not improve.

Same symptoms as I reported in the top post.

I suspected the face recognition might be using the GPU, so I turned that off in preferences, and restarted LRc, but it made no difference. ChatGPT says LRc does not use the GPU for face recognition.

Finally, I logged out of Windows rather than reboot, then logged back in. I restarted LRc, and it was back to normal. I really don't know what to make of it.

Unfortunately, this is still happening, on a nearly daily basis. Sometimes several times a day.
