Performance on Lightroom Classic very poor in develop module especially when any masks are used

I have a fairly high performance laptop running Windows 11 (Same issue in Windows 10) and when I'm in the Develop module and doing any significant editing especially using multiple masks all of the sliders become very laggy and can take several seconds for the preview to update after moving a slider. This isn't workable for the long term for sure. I am using a 4k monitor and have no intention of either a) buying a lower grade monitor for photo editing b) running the screen at less than optimal resolution. I will include the system snapshot below but would encourage Adobe to fix this issue as other software doesn't have this same issue. I can say that I have a Macbook Pro M1 and with it using the exact same 4k external monitor I have no issues at all. That said I'd like the Windows machine to work as well but right now its useless. I've already tried all of the performance tuning on the Adobe website as well as tried turning the GPU accelarion off and on (with it off its way worse on my system). Hoping Adobe will someday fix this!

"DirectX: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Laptop GPU (30.0.15.1277)"

It looks like you have a slightly older Game Ready driver (512.77).  Try installing the latest Studio Driver (512.96).  Nvidia says that the Studio drivers are specifically tested and optimized for creative products like Lightroom and Photoshop.

I already tried that ... on my system the game ready driver actually has a tiny bit better performance that the Studio Driver. I think the deal with the Studio driver is that it "might" be more stable if you have issues with the game driver. With either driver the performance is awful. Thanks!

Nvidia is a little coy about the difference (why do big companies find it so hard to be straight with their customers??).  What I've found from Nvidia (as opposed to informed observations by users):

https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/forums/creative-apps/26/296943/nvidia-studio-driver-vs-game-rea...

"All NVIDIA drivers provide full features and application support for top games and creative applications. If you are a gamer who prioritizes day of launch support for the latest games, patches, and DLCs, choose Game Ready Drivers. If you are a content creator who prioritizes stability and quality for creative workflows including video editing, animation, photography, graphic design, and livestreaming, choose NVIDIA Studio Driver."

https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/news/nvidia-studio-driver-now-supercharge-your-favorite-creativ...

"NVIDIA Studio Drivers provide artists, creators and developers the best performance and reliability when working with creative applications. To achieve the highest level of reliability, Studio Drivers undergo extensive testing against multi-app creator workflows and multiple revisions of the top creative applications from Adobe to Autodesk and beyond."

Agree with you about companies not being totally clear .... that said  I did read all that about a month ago when I was swapping drivers back and forth(nearly driving myself nuts in the process) and really finding next to zero difference between them on this system. Either way the development sliders are so laggy that I constantly finding myself moving them then waiting for 2 seconds for the screen to update then moving and waiting 2 seconds. Not helpful when trying to zero in on the perfect setting. My son has an Intel based Windows 10 machine that does the exact same thing ... maybe not quite as bad as mine as Windows 11 did seem to make it a little worse but either system is unusable.

My "opinion" is that Adobe has coded themselves into a corner with this version of Lightroom for Windows and so far isn't willing to make the investment in the product to really make it an awesome solution for those of us using 4k monitors and large MP cameras on the Windows platform. I shoot with a Phase One 100MP camera so the raw files aren't small. Again though ... works like a champ on my Macbook Pro M1 Max. Even worked fine on the 2019 Macbook Pro on the Intel i9 platform so its not an Intel vs AMD thing. I was just hoping to get it working under Windows because I like how my Canon printers work under Windows way better than under MacOS. So as it stands I have to do all my adjustments to the image on the Mac then print from a windows machine. Was hoping to be able to do most of the work from a single system. Thanks again ... open to any other suggestions but I litterally spent several months trying every suggestion from Adobe to improve performance and nothing has helped at all. Hoping someone from Adobe will see this (other similar posts also) and decide to "fix" it in the code.

First up, have you set the Widows OS power management to High Performance?

Probably not available on a laptop if on battery.

Windows 10, not sure of 11, defaults are conservative.

Second, that NVIDIA GPU, have you set up for high performance when running LrC? Used to be, default was not, newer cards ans support software might be defaulting the other way.

And third, Windows reboot. Used to be a cold boot, a hard reboot, would clear up lingering issues in memory, apparently nowadays a quick restart option (on by default) leaves a bit of kernel residing (at least on the hard drive), when you turn the computer off. A restart on the other hand will clear the junk, so a normal restart might be helpful. Try both a cold boot, followed by a restart, better? Yes I know, the magic reboot, shooting at stars, but what if?

Windows OS power management to High Performance ... check ... almost never run it on battery as it only lasts about 35 min on battery ... and yes the performance does get even worse on battery so plugged in it stays ... its more of a portable desktop than a laptop.

GPU is set for high performance on LrC ... check

Cold reboot ... check

Restart ... check

None of those items have made any difference ...

Thanks for spending a moment to try and help! 🙂

Update ... this should not be the case from everything that I have read but if I open the raw image in Adobe Camera Raw rather than Ligthroom Classic on my Windows laptop ... no issues at all. Open it in Lightroom ... slow. Not understanding this because its supposed to be the exact same engine. Maybe there is something in the lightroom interface that is less efficient?? Who knows but I can work with this at least! Would still love a fix for Lightroom ...

I am having the exact same problem. I even bought a new computer with more RAM, and the problem is the same on the new computer.

In the Task Manager, as I work in Lightroom, it starts up at around 1.5GB of RAM used. But as soon as I enter the develop module and start workign with masks or the Spot Removal tool, the RAM slowly starts creeping up and up, and it never decreases.

Eventually LR Classic is eating up all my RAM and the program becomes completely unusuable, as does everything else on the computer. I have to close down LR and start it again in order to get about 5-10 minutes of editing done before repeating the cycle.

Oddly, when I close LR Classic and watch it's memory consumption in the Task Manager, it doesn't shut down immediately. Instead, the RAM slowly decreases bit by bit for about 15-20 seconds before finally disappearing from the Task Manager.

I have been on Adobe Care Chat three times, and every single time, they have me give control of my computer over to them, during which time, they completley uninstall Lightroom, Photoshop, and Creative Cloud, and then reinstall them all again and then pull the the programs up and say "See? It's working now," and then they get off the chat. But it ALWAYS works for the first 5 minutes or so.

More recently, they told me that my catalog was too large. It has 80,000 Raw images in it, and I should try smaller catalog of less than 1000 images. So I made one with 10 images. Same problem occured.

I see this was a problem for some people about two years ago: https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-discussions/vram-memory-leak-still-not-fixed/m-p/10...

I hope they can fix it this time...

And other thread from 4 years ago, where the accepted solution seems to be to use Capture One... Sigh. I don't really want to, but I can't keep restarting Lightroom every 10 minuts.

Hey ... have you tried ACR yet? It works much better for me than Lightroom Classic. Might be worth a try. I'd be interested to see if you see better performance in ACR also??

I do not have the same problem with ACR. But the problems in Lightroom seem to come from the Masking and Spot Romoval tools, which ACR doesn't have.

I know I can use Bridge + ACR + PS to get the same (and better) results than LR by itself, but I am a high-volume editor, and really prefer my workflow to all be in one app.

I really hope Adobe fixes the masking andSpot removal tools in Lightroom...

Camera Raw does have those tools:

Update: Spent an hour with customer service chat yesterday. They said the problem was that I didn't have enough free space on my computer Hard drive (I had 25GB). They said I needed at least 50GB.

So I uninstalled several programs and deleted a large number of files. I now have 200GB free on my Hard Drive.

Guess what? This didn't help. The same problem occurs.

Gave access to Adobe Tech support through chat last week. They did two things:

1. He got into my Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs panel and removed several of them "Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable ..." programs. There are many there, and he went pretty fast, so I am not sure which ones he removed.

2. He went into Control Panel > Display > Graphic Settings, and then at the bottom used the Desktop app "browse" option to find Lightroom.exe and set it to "High Performance."

Lightroom performance has noticably improved, but it still crashes after about 30 minutes of use. This is better than before where it crashed every 10 minutes. Again, as before, it primarly only has problems when using masking brushes and the Spot Healing tool.

So ... getting ready to try a new pc build this weekend ...

Intel 12900ks running all cores at 5.4g

Nvidia RTX 3090Ti

64gb of DDR5 5600 RAM

8TB of NVMe PCI 4 Firecuda storage at 7.3 gbps read/write

Water cooled

Maybe that's enough to run lightroom? LOL Actually with ACR I'm already working ok again ... just curious if this new monster will even run Lightroom Classic as well as my 2019 Mac Laptop. Stay tuned .,..

So ... I'll post the lightroom dump of the setup of the pc in a subsequent post later but I can say that with this $10k build Lightroom performance is at least acceptable. LOL Its not perfect nor is it as good as ACR but its much better than on any of my "Normal" Windows machines. High level specs on this pc are as follows ...

Intel 12900KS Overclocked all P-cores at 5.4g (think I can get 5.5 maybe ... LOL) (Water cooled)

64g of DDR5-5600 RAM

Firecuda 530 NVMe drives 2X4TB (Image drives) Gen 4

Samsung NVMe drives for OS and scratch 2X2TB (way overkill but I have games there too!) Gen 4

Nvidia RTX3090Ti Overclocked

32 inch 4K LG OLED Monitor

I will say that the Overclock made a big difference in lightroom performance ...

Hoping that Adobe fixes this but for the time being I've moved to ACR and Bridge rather than lightroom because even with this build ... ACR is faster still.

Hope this helps someone!

Did you ever solve this problem with masking and poor performance?  Thanks.
