Photos edited in Photoshop get unstacked and uncategorized

I have switched from Windows (where I last used Lightroom a couple of years ago) to a Mac with the latest version of Lightroom. In the past, I could filter flagged images that span multiple collections from the All Photos catalog, then edit in Photoshop where they automatically stacked with the original and were placed into the collection where the original was placed.

Now when I attempt that method, the new PSD image disappears from those filtered results even though it IS flagged the same as the original. I have to add the PSD version to the collection where the original lives, and even then it will not remain stacked. I need the PSD to become the dominant of the two versions for later export, which in the past relied exclusively on the photos remaining stacked no matter where I access them. This is adding 3-4 extra steps in my workflow which is a huge pain when dealing with 1000 images! Is there a setting I'm missing, or have they just changed the way Lightroom works?
