Friends:

I am running lightroom 11.3.1 , and am noticing when I upload cards from another photographers camera (another sony a7 IV) , that those files, while still .arw and not jpegs, will have greyed out presets that work perfectly well on my ostensibly identical files........ what gives yo??

many thanks!

Your presets probably apply a (custom) raw profile. Raw profiles are camera specific, so even though both cameras product a raw file with the same extension (.ARW), they are not identical raw files and so your presets are not compatible.

These are custom profiles—— anyway to synch these up with the camera?--

Get a version for the other camera. If the profiles have the exact same name, then your preset should work and automatically use the correct profile, just like it does when you apply an Adobe raw profile in a preset.

It is totally possible to just go through each preset and spend time tweaking them (again) to fit the new camera, but there is actually alot of tweaking that needs to be done in order to make them line up again, and so it was something I was hoping to avoid haha.

Please clarify, are the two cameras identical make and model? Or different?

If they are the same model, then the profile issue should not happen, unless the profile is specific for an individual camera. What profiles are these exactly?

Presets for toning ---- adjusts color balances etc

A preset for toning and color balance should be compatible with any photo, even non-raw files, for as long as you did not include applying a raw profile in that preset. It's the inclusion of a camera profile that makes a preset incompatible with files from other cameras.

That’d be rad if thats the case!

I’ll look for camera profiles in the dev module— i did see if swapping/turning off lens profiles mattered (it didnt haha)

— where are the camera profiles?

And thanks!

So I found the camera profiles---- for my camera it simply shows up as Adobe Color and all the color presets work.  For the other sony, it says "profile missing" and the presets are grayed/slanted.   Changing the missing profile manually to "adobe color" doesn't fix things.  Any thoughts?

It should say which profile is missing. Is that a custom profile? The problem is normally inside the preset. If a preset tries to apply a profile that is not compatible with that particular image, then the preset name will be in italics and cannot be used.
