I have just edited 196 photos in lightrrom clssic. The images were imported from a file on my desktop. When i ret to export the edited images into a file on my desktop. it says 'the file cannot be found'. Why? The file is still on my desktop. I am online. This has never happned before the recent update.

If you move or rename files and/or folders from outside LrC (using Explorer or Finder) LrC can no longer access the files. Right click on the top-level folder in LrC that cannot be found and select Update Folder Location. Find the folder on your desktop or where ever it was moved to and select it. This will reassociate the files with the LrC catalog. Just to be clear when you import files using Add into LrC the files remain at their current location and a marker is added in the LrC catalog.

You have either moved or renamed or deleted the files (or the folders that contain them) outside of Lightroom Classic. That causes this problem. The instructions to fix this problem are here: http://www.computer-darkroom.com/lr2_find_folder/find-folder.htm

My your Desktop, are you referring to your screen?

As in a folder on your screen?

or

Are you referring to your desktop computer

as in a hard drive on your computer?

A screenshot would be helpful.
