LR 6 cannot be installed on M1 Macs. So the answer to your question is: you can't do this.
Although the successor to LR 6 called Lightroom Classic does not require you to store anything on the internet and will be able to read and use your LR 6 catalog.

The information in the Catalog file, if you have access to it, can only be read and utilized by Lightroom. The Catalog file only contains data about the work you did with your images if does not contain image files or copies of them.

"The question, to put it another way, is: is my work from the last few years that was stored in the catalog now gone and I have to rework all 8000 or so images or is there a way of integration/transportation?"
Install Lightroom Classic 11.4 on the new computer. Copy all the folders containing your photos and LR 6 catalog(s) to the new computer. Use LR 11.4 to open the old LR 6 catalogs, and it will upgrade the LR 6 catalog to LR 11.4 format, losing none of your work.
There are lots of details to get wrong, so carefully follow the steps in this authoritative article:

The only way to read and use information stored in your LR 6 catalog on an M1 Mac is to upgrade to the current Lightroom Classic (version 11.4). If you don't want to do that, then the information in your LR 6 catalog is lost. There is no integration of LR 6 catalogs with any other software. There is no transport mechanism to other software. As stated, Lightroom Classic does NOT require you to store your photos in the cloud.
You could use the 7-day free trial of Lightroom Classic to read all your information in the LR 6 catalog and export it in JPG or TIF files, such that other software can read it.
