Red dot under the mask symbol

I am using version 12.3 of LrC.  On one of my recently processed photos I am getting a red dot under the Mask tool symbol.  Normally there is a white (or light gray) dot under the tool symbols like "Healing", "Crop" or "Edit" indicating that some modifications were done with that tool, but in some cases I'm seeing a red dot.  Does anyone know what that's about.  I have revisited that tool and made sure that modifications were complete.  So, I don't know what may be causing that.  Thanks for your help.

This is a new indicator. Normally it would indicate that one of the masks needs updating.

The only way I found of removing it is by selecting the masks and searching for the one that says that it needs updating, then clicking on to update the mask.

In Develop, go to the Settings menu and choose Update AI Settings.

Or use the shortcut Command+Option+U to update... easier

I noticed the red dots also, and wondered if they're being displayed unnecessarily.

For example:

I have a photo of a small flower, with the flower at the center of the image and some vines behind it.

I use Select Object to create a mask on the flower. Lightroom correctly selects just the flower for the mask, the boundaries of the mask are accurate, and there are no other masks on the image. The grey dot appears under the mask tool, as expected.

I now use the Healing tool to remove a dust spot from somewhere else on the image, outside the area of the object mask. The gray dot under the mask tool turns red.

Should this scenario trigger the need to update a mask, or turn on the red dot?

I would expect it to trigger the warning. But yes, it seems unnecessary in the case you describe.
