Smart previews failed to build

My last import would not build the preview of the raw files. I'm using mac OS High Sierra 10.13.6, and Lightroom classic 9.1 release. I don't think I can update it currently on this operating system. Is this due to the older version, or is there a fix for this?  The raw files I import are from Capture one- IIQ files. I don't adjust the raw files in LR, I just import them for archiving with the high res tifs. Thanks for the help.

If you just import them for archiving, why do you build smart previews in the first place?
