Syncing stuck with 163 (imaginary) photos

Ever since I switched from Windows to Mac in November, I had a very annoying synchronization situation. I had over 6,600 pictures syncing in an endless loop. No sync errors were displayed and there was no entry in Sync Activity.

I then created a "Diagnostic Report" and looked into it. I noticed that the lion's share of the entries were in the "Sync and Error Assets" section. Unfortunately, you can only see the top 10 images with names, the rest are just listed with a "document id".

I also had this problem on Windows, but with far fewer images. I solved the problem by editing the images in LrC and then synchronizing them correctly and reducing the number of images in the synchronization.

So I selected the 10 images whose names I could determine from the report and rotated them by 90°. In fact, there were 10 less pictures in my more than 6,600 "pending syncs".

So in the next step, I rotated all the pictures from "All Synced Phtographs" by 90>. I then let the whole thing run overnight, hoping that this would solve the problem. Unfortunately, it didn't: I managed to reduce the number to about 3,300 pictures, but that's still far too many to go through them one by one in increments of 10.

So I decided to take the axe and follow Califdan's suggestion. (https://www.lightroomqueen.com/community/threads/lua-script-for-batch-remaining-collections-anybody....)

Delete all pictures from "All synced photos" and the cloud and re-sync everything.

I managed to reduce the number to 163, but they are still syncing in an endless loop. As before, no sync errors and no syncv activity to be seen.

It is also completely incomprehensible to me why these images should be synced:

  1. there are no more images in the cloud (even the recycle bin is empty).
  2. there are no pictures in "All synced photos" in LrC
  3. there are no synced collections.

This means that there should be no more sync process. Looking at a newly generated

"Diagnostic Report" showed me the first 10 pictures from the list of 163. These are marked as "Upload". So I assume that there is an attempt to upload them from LrC to the cloud. I also found this entry in the "Lightroom Classic Preferences" section:

uploadCount = 163;

Here is what I tried:

  1. reset Lightroom preferences -> no change

2. option-clicked the "Rebuild Sync Data" button in Sync Actiovity.  -> No change

3. edited the images in question (hoping the upload would work as above). -> No change

4. Removed 3 pictures from LrC. -> No change

(This means that LrC still tries to synchronize the images without success, even though they are no longer in the catalog).

5. Manually moved one of the photos in question to "All synced photos". -> The number briefly increases to 164 and then decreases to 163. The photo is now available in the cloud. However, an image with the same name is still visible in the error list in the "Diagnostic Report".

That's why I chose the headline "Syncing stuck with 163 (imaginary) photos", because I have photos with the same names in my catalog, but obviously these are not the ones that the sync process wants to access. 😞

I am now running out of ideas on how to proceed. I would be very, very grateful for any constructive suggestions.

Follow-up: I just marked a collection with 20 images as a synced collection. Now only 8 photos get uploaded, 2 show up in "All Sync Errors". The Sync Status remains empty, there ae still 163 images syncing permanentnly and I don't have the slightest hint on why the 2 images pop up in the "All Sync Errors" collection. 😞
