Thumbnails appear in LR next to original one after editing files and Save As in PS

I just updated to LR Version 11.0.1

In earlier version when I edited files sent from LR in PS and used action to do Save As to 3 external hard drives, there were no thumbnails appeared next to original ones in LR which I prefer. Now they do, so I have 3 more thumbnails of the same file showing. Is there anyway to disable this function?

This "round-trip" is the intended way for external editing to work in Lightroom Classic: an imported image needs to be modified in some way that LrC itself cannot do, so the practical necessity is to have another program create and save a file containing those modifications.

The very first save to disk that PS does in a given external-edit instance (assuming PS and LrC are version-compatible) is expected to be notified back to, and auto imported by, LrC. Any subsequent and separate Save As operations in PS, of the same image, under some different file name / location, would not normally be expected to appear in LrC. But possibly it is different when multiple saves are executed by a single Action, and the image had not previously been saved at all.

You can tell this unsaved state by the PS working document name showing the file name and file type of the original imported image underlying this external edit (NEF, saY) for the meanwhile, while awaiting a real saved filename.

When PS and LrC are not version-intercompatible, another workflow may happen where the new image version is already made and pre-saved to disk and imported by LrC before PS ever sees it, and with no involvement of ACR whatever btw. In this instance the PS working document name will reflect, right from the start, that pre-saved filename. Further saving will update this imported file's content so the Catalog will then see that. But any saving of other file versions from PS will be invisible to the Catalog.

Perhaps the difference of behaviour you are seeing has something to do with a change in the intercompatibility between PS/ACR, and LrC. Or perhaps you have been accustomed to having external edits auto stack with their originating images. Or perhaps you have been accustomed to some sort of view filtering which suppressed those from displaying; or a different view sorting, such as added-order, which would naturally separate those one from the other.

I do sort of wonder, though, is there any merit in considering doing your saves to these 3 hard drives from inside LrC? Multiple export presets can be invoked to run within a single operation, each with its own differing destination and other output settings. Then images that have been externally edited from LrC, and images that have not, could be treated the same. Every such image would not need to have gone out to PS in order to participate.

This has indeed changed recently. If you do not want to add the edited files to Lightroom, then do not use 'Edit in Photoshop' but use 'Export' and export the file as a full sized TIFF or PSD with the same color space and bit depth that you used for 'Edit in'. At the bottom of the Export dialog you can set the option that the exported image should be opened in Photoshop.
