I currently import images and backup LR catalogue to ext hd. I now want a new ext HD, but after copying images and LR catalogue to new ex hd I can only get Previews. How do I operate my new ext hd?

Do you mean Smart Previews? Do you have both the old EHD and the new one showing up under Folders in your Library module? Can you post a screen shot of your folder panel? Did you update the location of the folders in Lightroo to the new hard drive?

More detail, please. You copied images ... from where to where? All of them, or some of them? Are the copied images in the exact same folder hierarchy (but just on a different disk) as before you copied them ... or did you move things around? And just to confirm for clarity, you did a COPY and not a MOVE? What does backup catalog have to do with your question?

What is your operating system version NUMBER? What is your software version NUMBER? We need version NUMBERs and not words like "latest" or "up-to-date".
