P: AI Assisted Frame Expansion (Outcropping - Outpainting)

AI tools are now common in Lightroom, such as Masking and Healing - what if there was a feature available in the crop and rotate menu that allowed the crop region to expand outside the boundaries of the original photos frame, and the blank areas are then filled in with a Healing AI. See image below.

This could give photographers more flexibility in framing images, especially if the subject takes up majority of th original frame. It would obviously only work well on low detail areas such as sky or foreground.

Because Lightroom is a non-destructive editor, crop is just an overlay. To achieve something like this, Lightroom would have to create a new image, which could be the same kind of linear RGB DNG that HDR, panorama or Denoise creates. It also means that the file size of that image would be at least 3 to 4 times as big as the original. Would that still be acceptable for you? Of course you could already do this by sending the image to Photoshop, except that creates a TIFF or PSD, not a DNG.

Thanks for the response Johan, I would be accepting of this yes. I woudnt want to spoil the original raw image, but having the flexibility to quick fix images with bad compositions without having to learn/use photoshop would be great. Surely this is win-win so long as the software warned the user that file size increases upon use of the feature?

Of course, and I wouldn't be surprised if this is in the pipeline somewhere. I think what has more priority is filling up empty space that arises from perspective changes, but basically this is the same thing of course.

Wellp, Looks like the feature has been added to photoshop/Photoshop Beta! Great news! Hopefully a more refined version will make it to Lightroom soon! I wonder if I have any credit for this feature? I guess its an obvious feature for AI!
