P: Expand Caption field to multiple lines

Explorer ,
Dec 05, 2023 Dec 05, 2023

When creating an IPTC template the caption field is one tiny line. Please can this be expanded to several lines so that I can see the whole caption as I write it.

Also, Apple's Aperture used to show you the detail of the IPTC template in the import window before importing images, this allowed you to make slight adjustments to the template just for that import session. This would be very useful in Lightroom.

I might be wrong but I don't see any "Find and Replace" option for IPTC metadata. If I have an error in a caption or IPTC field I have to manually find and change each image instead of using a global 'Find & replace' string and choosing which fields it should apply to.

You're better off with single requests per idea for the voting system.

Have you looked at the Large Caption option from the list of Metadata Presets? You can also go from Default to Customize what you see.

On the template front, you can create, modify and update them via Edit Preset in Metadata.

When you select more than one image you have the option to apply to one or selected photos, so you never need to do things one at a time.

Thank you Sean. You haven't understod my post correctly.

The 'Edit Metadata Presets' menu only shows one line of the caption field, of aboout 50 characters long. The 'Large Caption' window is only in the Library viewing mode and is nothing to do with the Edit Metadats Presets menu.

As for templates, yes I am aware uou can edit them with Edit Preset but that takes you back to the user unfriendly 'Edit Metadata Presets' window and changes, or, creates a new template. What Aperture allowed was for an IPTC template with all fields to be shown before in the import window, and the user was able to make a changes directly in that import window for that particular Import session. The original template remained unchanged, but you could tweek it for an import should something change.

Finally, selecting multiple images does allow you to make changes across many images, but it is not a 'Find & Replace' so you have to know where those images are that contain what you want to change.

"Finally, selecting multiple images does allow you to make changes across many images, but it is not a 'Find & Replace' so you have to know where those images are that contain what you want to change."

You can use the Library Filter bar to find images with fields containing the desired text:

Then if they all contain the same exact text (as they would if you used an Import metadata preset), you can select all the photos and modify the problem field for all of them, as discussed before.

If you'd expressed that the issue was Metadata Templates specifically, I'd have addressed it to that. You referred to IPTC Templates, which don't exist as an item, leaving me to interpret them as Metadata panel related. Clearly you meant Metadata Templates with further explanation (or after a proper gander maybe).

I think you've also missed the Save Current Settings as New Preset in the Preset menu at the top of the Edit Metadata Preset Dialog, which does create a new template without overwriting the last one.

Is the dialog ugly and looks like it was from 2006? Yep. Could it be prettied up? Absolutley.

Search is definitely a different beast compared to Aperture. Prepare the new caption Find an image with the old caption you want to replace, copy the caption. Go to All Photographs in the Catalog Panel. Press \ to open Filters. Choose Text, then Caption. Set to Contains all. Paste the caption. All the filters photos will have the caption. Copy and paste the new caption.

Smart collections would work too.

You're still better off one request at a time, and go into detail as per the Feature Request post:
