I also wanted to do my best to address the larger question from the User community regarding CS6 incompatibility with 10.15, and the current subscription-based model. Technology innovation continues to forge ahead at an unprecedented pace, and our OS partners are releasing new versions faster and more frequently than before. Adobe must also move with our technology partners and update our applications with new OS releases to provide you, our creative users, with the best experience. If you’ve upgraded your OS to 10.15, you will discover that the installer for CS6 no longer works. Unfortunately, CS6 is built on technologically that isincompatible with the new OS at a foundational level.
If you are used to a perpetual license, the switch to a subscription may seem daunting. I remember when I made the switch myself and waiting for buyer’s remorse to set in. It didn’t. As a user, I discovered that bug fixes and improvements to the user interface were continually being updated. I was thrilled to find that my Adobe creative software was always in lockstep with my computer updates. When I had a hard-drive failure, I dreaded having to rebuild my vast Lr Catalog. I was overwhelmed thinking about the number of hours it would take to get everything back to where I had it—even having a backup. I cannot tell you what a relief it was that Lr simply downloaded all of my settings and photos from the cloud. I still reconnected my locally stored images and catalog to a newly downloaded Lr app, but a week’s long process took a whole 10 minutes.
I discovered as a user, the subscription-based model enables Adobe to respond to new OS releases actively and quickly push out new versions that address compatibility bugs and issues. Subscription-based models also allow our engineers to develop new features suggested by our user community actively. Things might feel a little bumpy immediately after an OS release, but we are working hard to ensure that the benefits will be far greater than the temporary discomfort.

Thanks for the information. I have Lightroom 3 (serial number XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX). I now use a MacBook Pro with OS 10.15 (Catalina). When I click to open Lightroom 3, I get a message that says "Lightroom 3 will damage your computer. Throw it in the Trash." Really? Seems implausible that this would happen. I would like to open the app even if just to retrieve photos that are in there.
This likely stems from the way processors were and are built, and the way in which apps must adapt to them.
Until a few years ago, processors were known as "32-bit". You can think of this sort of like the number of usable lanes at an intersection. As technology improved, this was doubled to 64-bit. Effectively more lanes for information to travel through and be processed in.
In order to make use of this advance in processor technology, applications needed to be updated or re-written. If apps weren't updated, most operating systems would allow them to run at the reduced 32-bit rate they were written for. This is known as 'legacy support'. OS's would support old, out of date or 'legacy' software to maintain compatibility. However, allowing this legacy support means the OS needs to be designed with older software in mind, and the OS needs to maintain the ability to run tasks at the reduced 32-bit rate. Long term, this isnt sustainable, as devoting resources to supporting old software and restricting new software to maintain compatibility does not improve the experience, security or functionality of technology moving forward.
Apple Macs have used 64-bit processors for over a decade now. So it's been a pretty good run of support for older 32-bit apps. But this support has come to an end. The last two updates of macOS have included alerts for 32-bit apps stating 'this app will not be supported in future versions of macOS', so hopefully this isnt a huge surprise to you.
I was hesitant moving to the subscription model at first too, but knowing that you always have access to the latest updates, newest features, most compatible software without needing to purchase new versions of software every year, or second year, is quite comforting.

This happened to me, but only after I had reinstalled Lightroom in Catalina and used it for several hours.
I came back a few days later, and got your message.
This is not a 32 vs 64 bit issue.
My theory is that Lightroom updates itself from the web, and Catalina does not like this.
What worked for me was Trashing the app, and reinstalling from the 3.6 download; I didn't have to type in my serial number again, and I chose not to Trash the .dmg file in case I have to reinstall it again!

Ok so there's a problem, however how do we work around this...... There are some that do this for their jobs and when I for example can't get into my folders on my desktop - that's a problem. Apple says I have to contact you so here's me contacting you
Ok so no help, told to go back to Mojave until Adobe does an update - ridiculous of course - but here's the newest dilemma: I now show after the Apple update to Catalina I now have three HD's. Why and how do I fix this? Here's a screenshot of what I'm talking about.
I was having the issue with LR Classic CC where I'd launch the program only to have it sort of hang/stall out. I called Apple and the issue was with permissions with the app. This article was our reference in making the changes needed. It required going into the Terminal and plugging in the script - or whatever the line of code is.
This is what we typed in:
diskutil resetUserPermissions / `id -u`
I restarted my computer, launched LR again...and things appear to work. I have no idea if this will work for everyone, but it might be worth trying.

This seems to imply that the latest version of Lightroom under the subscription model is compatible with Mac O/S Catalina. I have have been utilizing the subscription model of Lightroom Classic for a number of years and am currently on version 8.4.1, which is the latest release. It is not compatible with Apple's latest O/S release of Catalina. When I (foolishly) installed Catalina last week, the installation moved my Lightroom application into an 'Incompatibility' folder on my desktop. After consultation with the 'geniuses' at the local Apple store I was informed that the only resolution was to uninstall O/S Catalina on my Mac and reinstall O/S Mojave from my backup.
I am having problem importing images for an external hard drive into Lightroom Classic when I upgraded my Mac to Catalina. When I choose import and then imort from the external hard drive. The forders in the external hard drive do not show up.
Also, like LueyD, I now have 3 hard drives showing in my Lightroom
As I noted in my earlier post, Lightroom Classic is presently incompatible with Mac O/S Catalina. Lightroom is 32 bit technology and Catalina is 64 bit. The only solution I am aware of (based upon my expereince with the specialists at the Mac store where I live) is to revert to O/S Mojave until Adobe upgrades to 64 bit technology in Lightroom Classic. Supposedly, they are working on making this happen in April 2020 from what I have read on the WEB. I am not very sanguine however, given Adobe's strong push to move Lightroom users to the 'Creative Cloud' as noted in Rebecca Kelly's note of October 19th.
After 5 hours online with Adobe, I am finally able to import images off the external hard drive. It had to do with giving Lightroom full disc access/permission. I tried to watch what he was doing but I am just a photo nerd and not a tech nerd.
I updated my Mac to Catalina in December and have been having problems ever since with importing photos through Lightroom Classic directly from my phone ONTO an external hardrive. I can export form the external hardrive onto my Mac desktop no problem. I can also import photos from the phone onto the Mac desktop. But anytime I try to import from the phone to the External Hardrive Lightroom gets hung up. It gives me an error message that "the destination folder is not writable". I know the external hardrive is writable since I can import onto is from the Mac desktop. I have searched through all the links on the Adobe website here and for the love cannot find a number or link to talk to an actual person to get help with this. Where did you find a contact number to talk to a real person at Adobe?
Sorry to hear you're running issues while importing images from your phone to store on your external hard drive through Lightroom Classic. Did you have this issue prior to updating to Catalina?
What exact version of Catalina & Lightroom Classic do you currently have? You can find this information in Lightroom Classic by going to Help > System Info.
Have you tried going giving Lightroom Classic Full Disk Access? You can do this by going to System preferences > Security & Privacy > Files & Folders > "Click to lock to make changes" > Add Lightroom Classic.
Thank you for responding to my post. I did find a number for tech support. I called and the guy proxied into my computer to try and figure out the issue. I did not have this issue prior to updating to Catalina. He gave LR Classic Full Disk Access but that didn't fix the importing issue. He ended up telling me that it is a problem that Adobe is having with Catalina and that Adobe has not released an update with the fix yet. He instructed me to import from my Iphone through LR Classic onto my Internal hard drive, then go back and import again from my Internal hard drive onto my External hard drive. This is so much extra work and very annoying. But I am glad to find out that it is indeed an issue with Adobe and not with my External hard drive. He could not give me a time projection for when the update fix will be available from Adobe.

I had checked the list of incompatible apps on my Mac before upgrading to Catalina. Lightroom was not on that list, so the error message and the inability to open Lightroom 3 came as a suprise. How do I proceed from here? If I bite the bullet and buy the Lightroom subscription, will it be able to access my Lightroom 3 photo library? I'm an amateur photographer and have everything cataloged by specie in Lightroom and don't want to lose that or the editing history.
A subscription to the Photography Plan that includes Lightroom-Classic, Photoshop and more (with 20Gb Cloud US$9.99/m) would mean that you can work with Lightroom-Classic (v9 a big advance on your v3!).
The first time you try to open your Lr3 Catalog (the zzzz.LRCAT file) with Lr-Classic, it would be copied then the copy upgraded to work with Lr-Classic going forward. All you photos, work and editing will be in the upgraded Catalog.
Dear Rebecca thank you for letting us know what's going on. I was on tech-support today over five hours and I gave up. We are being affected by PSD low output resolution. This has literally put our studio on hold. We are backlogged with retouching. Adobe needs to understand how important these programs are to us as a professional studio. We understand what a pain in the butt it must be to keep up with Apple but a warning should be sent out not to update iOS if they're not going to keep up with the times at the same speed.
Here is my situation:
Late Oct I tried to enter my lightroom and encounterred the need to upgrade and then recieved message to:
1 Change to another catalog
3 See tech note.
I ended up following advise on 3 - didn't work, I only have one catalog -
I called techn support. I received a responce with a call back two hours later.
We spent 4 hours on the call and with screen assistance, the agent saw and worked with my situation and essentially updated my Lightroom version from 5or 6 to version 8. He then tried the upgade and it still would not accept it. I worked on in a bit more and then said he would excelate the issue to a higher tech. team, they would call me back within 24 hours.
This did not happen for 3-4 days. I called back the beginning of last week and 11 hours later another 1st level agent again accesed my computer and worked on it for 3-4 hous. This time he was able to develop a test catalog with did accept the version 9, but not with the images on my version 8, which is the version I which I work. He tried to again get my version 8 to accept 9 but again failed. He said I would recieve another call within 24 hours.
No call, so Monday of this week I called again, again another 11 hour wait. By the way, throughout all of this I have had t hold off on working on projects until I get my version 8 working to accept 9. A nice man named Gopal, answered and was most accomidating a appalled with, as he said, the very uprofessional treatment I was recieving. He proceeded to again try to get it to work with no avail. He promised to excelate and committed I would get another all withing 2 hours.
To his great commitment, he called back and asked if the response from the 2nd level tech team had called, which it had not.
He asked to hold and then went to his supervisor who apparently attempted to intervene on my behalf, the supervisor asked to wait for 2 hours to get a second level call back.
I waited for 1 day, when Gopal called again and was again upset nothing had occcurred. I waited all day for a call, - nothing.
Rebecca, I am an ex-operational senior level executive where I was responsible for signifcant service driven telecomunications. I would like to have a reference to get to a higher level leadership to appraise them of this total lack of customer service. They will have not business if these events continue to repeat themselves. Can you help? Thanks EAG
