For years I downloaded straight from my Nikon D750 to Lightroom 5. Now suddenly, LR can't "SEE" my pics. I have to run them through a DNG converter before LR can find them. Same camera. Same LR. Any ideas about what might have happened?

Something obviously has changed on your system. The model requires at least Lightroom 5.7. Have you had to reinstall Lightroom? Has something changed on your computer system? Something has changed because Lightroom wouldn't just suddenly decide to stop reading the images if it was the same version and everything else remained the same.
