I have been on the phone with support twice now, the last call lasted 2.5 hours yesterday. No solution found.
I am on very recent hardware, drivers all up to date, OS up to date.
Basically, I don't see any images, just grey, when browsing photos to import and also after import in my library. Once I click on develop, then I do see the image.
After trying everything he could think of, the Adobe support specialist said that he believes that something is corrupt for my user account on my windows machine. He created a new user, and lightroom worked fine for that user account. However, he doesn't actually know what the problem is and told me to call Microsoft to have them help me copy everything from my main user account to a new user account to eliminate the problem.
1. He doesn't actually know that this will work.
2. You can't just call Microsoft for support unless you have paid for that level of support.
3. All the online tutorials I see for copying everything from one user to the next are convoluted and seem risky without a total backup, which I have, but really I shouldn't have to do this for Lightroom. I have no other issues on this machine.
Specs:
Lightroom versions from latest, going back 4 versions. Same results.
Windows 10, up to date
GTX 1080ti 11GB, latest nvidia drivers. I've tried older drivers too.
x299, 7900x, etc.
One thing that can cause grey thumbnails is a corrupted monitor profile. https://www.lightroomqueen.com/how-do-i-change-my-monitor-profile-to-check-whether-its-corrupted/

Wow. How did support not know this. Totally did the trick. I have two monitors and one of them was already on correct profile per your link, and the other wasn't. Over 4 hours spent on the phone with them for something that you fixed in 2 minutes.
Many thanks dj_paige!

Wow! Thank You so much! I have spent between 3-4 hours trying to figure out what is wrong with my Lightroom and then this helped me fixed it under 2 minutes. Thank you for your contribution for the humanity. Have a wonderful day!
