I have Lightroom CC (I think; its the desktop stand-alone version). A dialogue box popped up the last time I used Lightroom and more or less forced me to do a "catalog upgrade." Now I have no access to my catalog, cannot import, and when I edit an image I'm not able to export it. All of these issues are caused by a screwed up catalog, and I have no idea of how to fix it. I will pay to have someone work with me, but I'll never solve my problem reading hundreds of forum notes.
I'm using Lightroom 6 on a desktop with Windows 10.

Hi Mnstorytelrsteve,
Sorry that you're getting an error message sating you need to upgrade your catalog and now you cannot access your catalog. Let us help make this right.
Could you please recover your correct catalog back following the steps mentioned in this article How to create and manage catalogs in Photoshop Lightroom Classic and let us know if that helps?
Thanks,
Akash

You underestimate the level of my confusion. I tried to follow the instructions you linked for me. I got nowhere.

I don't even understand the title you have put on my plea for help. Is my problem really about upgrading from Lightroom Classic to Lightroom CC? I didn't think so. I just wanted to use Lightroom as I have been for many years. I was told I had to upgrade. The upgrade threw my catalog into total chaos. Now Lightroom is not functional for me at all.

First up, please verify your exact version of Lightroom. And provide some additional info about your rig. Accomplish this as follows:
In LR click on Help, click on System Information, click on Copy. Paste that into a reply.

Ok, so version clear, from that I see no reason why your catalog was updated. It is not like you upgraded to v8.3
Well, that is related to one of my other inquires, the one about Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop App. As if installed, would show a possible newer version. But unless you paid Adobe, then you would not have Lightroom Classic v8.3 installed.
Had you ungraded, the yes, a catalog update would occur
Edit/Followup
ah, “I do not” as in you do not have Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop App.

Not related to your issue. But on your GPU, OpenGL failed. You need to force use of DirectX instead of OpenGL.

Lightroom v6.3, not the last, you should attempt to update to the last version, v6.14
6.1, 6..2. 6.3..etc....6.14
Link (unless Adobe broke it):
Download legacy versions of Creative Cloud apps
Note, it is titled Lightroom 6, but in the end it is 6.14

Not at a PC, and stuck in a waiting room, so bare with me, some of this could be confused.
Just to check, on your PC, and I forget the steps, but in the system info whatever it is called. Look at your installed applications, look to see that only one Lightroom is installed.

Now I have no access to my catalog, cannot import, and when I edit an image I'm not able to export it.
Please tell us EXACTLY and in great detail what happens. If there are error messages, please quote the exact complete unedited word-for-word verbatim error message.
Saying you can't do this and you can't do that is not enough information for us to determine what to do.

I thought I had described my problem. I'll try again, but I fear I can't
use terms with the precision you require.
In the Library module, I used to see catalog files, organized by year,
that I could call up and edit. I no longer see any subvision in those
files. Under Catalog I see "All Photographs 1559." I can't access
them. I have no synched photographs. I have 3 Quick Collections. I have
1 Previous Import. I have 1 Temporary Collection. Virtually all of my
photographs seem to be lumped in one huge file that I cannot access
because they are all greyed out.
Error messages are not an issue.

Oh, well that is not what I read in on your initial post. Sounded like when you launched Lightroom it told you that it had to update your catalog. Such an action occurs as a result of an upgrade, as in going from v5 to v6.
Most of my inquiries are now suspect, helpful perhaps, and some things noted.
I see some other inquiries coming

So, in Prefences, Performance, is that option Use Graphics Processor checked? Uncheck it.
hmm, that would better apply if they were all grayed out. But check on that.

It seems as if you have opened the wrong catalog file.
Please use the Lightroom menu command File->Open Recent and try opening each catalog file shown there. If you find the catalog file with the photos and collections etc. that you want, you are done.
If that doesn't work, use your operating system's search feature to search all hard drives for files whose name ends with .LRCAT and then double-click on each one found to open it in Lightroom, so you can see if it shows the photos and collections etc. that you are looking for.

Also, in the folder that your catalog is in. Where your “.lrcat” file is located, what files exist, the ones ending with .lrcat
a screenshot hot would be helpful
