Convert LR 8 catalog to LR 6

today my LR 8 stopped working, it continuously crashes on open and i'm no longer able to use it.

i searched online for a solution but nothing solved it.

i never enjoyed LR 8 anyway, so i decided to return to LR 6 which is much better and safe.

the problem is that now i get a message saying that i cannot open my catalog file because it is too new.

how can i convert it? is there any way to import it to LR 6, or any other LR before LR 6 (i own them all).

or, in alternative, is there any other program similar to LR where I can open my LR 8 catalog so I can continue my work?

Any chance you have a Lightroom 6 catalog backup from when you were using it previously? If you do, at least you could go back to that point.

You cannot convert a Lightroom Classic CC Version 8 catalog to a Lightroom 6 catalog. Can't be done.

The best you can do is write the edits and user-provided metadata to XMP using LR 8, and then import those photos into LR 6. SOme information will not transfer this way — this is not a complete list, but edit history, pick flags, collections, virtual copies, edits using new features that LR 6 doesn't have, and a bunch of other things, will not transfer.

what about the rating?

how can i transfer the ratings i did on LR 8 to LR 6?

i already installed LR 6 with an old backup, i don't mind to restart all my work again (at least LR 6 works) but it would be a huge waste of time to view again all photos to rate and mark.

i'm going to buy a search plugin, so i don't mind to miss all tags to, i just need a way to import the ratings done on LR 8.

any ideas?

The rating is stored in the catalog. I don't know of any way to get the rating from the new catalog back to a Lightroom 6 catalog. The two are not compatible, and the new catalog cannot be converted back to a Lightroom 6 catalog. This has never been a feature in Lightroom.

So, do you get an error message when v8 fails.

And does it just close itshelf or does it freeze up, or does it cause the computer to crash?

some, nit all steps to take, crash and odd behavor in general

1) Cold reboot PC , turn it off, turn it on, not just a reboot

2) Check for updates to Lightroom (done)

3) Check OS for updates (early win 10, apparently any Windows 8, not so much an issue in MAC)

4) Check your GPU driver for updates (Windows OS)

5) In Lightroom Preferences turn off using the GPU, see what happens (ok, you can not get that far)

6) Reset (aka restore) the Preferences file. (carefully review these links)

Replacing the Lightroom Preference File – Lightroomers

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bARt-hoCc2Q  (Got buggy from their)

Preference file and other file locations | Lightroom Classic CC and Lightroom 6

Recover catalog and images after resetting preferences in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom

7) Disable Plug-ins (one at a time) (Ok you can not get that far)

8) Windows OS should use DirectX not OpenGL, MAC OS should use Metal (can not get....)

9) Rule out a corupt catalog, make a new catalog and see if issues go away (start LR by holding ALT key down while clicking on icon, might be CNTRL key)

10) Try using the local Admin account, Try a clean user account. Make a new user account on your PC and try it. Shows computer account issues.

11) Open the Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop app, sign out, sign in.

done all that but nothing solved the problem.

later it started working mysteriously and from time to time it started to crash continuously.

today i found out that it's caused by having my tablet connected to my laptop. looks like LR crashes if i have my tablet or my phone connected or charging in my laptop. it's ridiculous, it only happens with LR. really crazy. but now I know that LR 8 is not compatible with android devices connected while running and i can continue using LR 8. i really regret leaving LR 6 for this.

Adobe should inform us about this incompatibility 😕

no, i can plug any android device and it never asks for LR to launch.

i have 4 USB 3 ports, all working fast and great, and 1 Type-C, it crashes if I connect in any port with any cable.

the LR 8 crashes in any window in a few seconds if i have any android device connected, i don't need to do anything.

there's no problem at all with my laptop, this problem doesn't happen with any other application, in fact i don't even remember to have such severe crashes since the 90's

i think that the problem is caused by some java stuff from LR 8. I noticed in task manager that my computer is filled with creative cloud trash running in processes since i installed LR 8. LR 6 was much more clean, and i never had any big problem with LR from 1 to 6.

this is the crash message: <crash exception="EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION" exceptionCode="0xc0000005" instruction="0x00007FFB5993CDE4">

i found something similar here: Lightroom: Crashes when I hit Import button | Photoshop Family Customer Community

but in my case i don't even need to hit the import button.

I do not recall if your OS was mentioned above. Following are more MAC OS centric (in determining where the report is), not sure, specifically, where the crash report in Windows OS would be."EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION" exceptionCode="0xc0000005" instruction="0x00007FFB5993CDE4"> is not the complete story about the crash.

Not at all aware of why Lightroom Classic CC would be heavy into Java or Java script. But not a coder.

To clear up a bad hunch. (i.e. tell David that David is wrong), can you post your system information (from LR)?

In LR, click on Help, click on System Information, clcik on Copy. Paste into reply.
