Is there a sure-fire method of converting date-based folders to folders with descriptive names? This will require merging several folders into one new folder. Any suggestions?  Thank you in advance

As far as I understand you question right, there are no automatism to do that. You have done it manually.

It is possible the I've misunderstood something. So please explain more detailed what you want to do.

Not only is there no "sure-fire" method of doing this ... I think it is the wrong direction to go in. If you want certain photos in different folders to be organized together, use keywords. Leave photos in their existing date based folders, assign keywords and other metadata to obtain further organization.
