folders have disappeared after an update in Lightroom Classic

Eeek. I just opened LR and a box came up asking me if I wanted to update folders (I think..silly me didn't read it properly) and I said yes. It then did its thing then a dialog box came up mentioning that I need to sync folders. Just ignored it, went to my library and 2018 and 2019 folders are missing. I was editing 3000 photos from a big shoot and had edited most and flagged mant for deletion.  all disappeared.  Help...what happened?
