Grinding to a halt on a fast PC

Apologies if this has already been covered here but I've scoured the Internet, applied every solution I can find and am now on the verge of giving up on Lightroom for good.

I have a catalogue of around 6,000 pictures in Lightroom Classic that I am adding to daily. The images are stored on an external hard drive and the catalog and the cache is on an SSD. The PC is self-built, using an AMD Ryzen 5 processor (6 cores) running at 4.2MHz and 16GB of DDR4 memory.

Everything runs beautifully on this rig apart from Lightroom, which has to stop and think if I select two or more picures in Library view. Editing seems fine but everything else is grindingly slow. I've turned off background tasks such as address lookup and face detection. Still no joy.

Any and all suggestions gratefully received.

Steve S.
