HDR Panorama - choosing the stitch point

Hi,

Because of not having a wide enough lens (I have written about this on another thread) I am experimenting around a pan + 7x bracketed (HDR) shot for interiors, thus performing a merge > HDR Panorama stitch.  The thing is, while initial results truly are Wow! (the software these days really is impressive), it doesn't take much inspection to see that the final result doesn't quite cut it.  Often there is a goldfish bowl effect.  Is it possible to choose the stitch point?  How would I even attempt to instruct LR where to concentrate on the two coinciding vertical points/lines?

Thank you,

DC

Unfortunately you can't add or change control points used to stitch the panorama. However, you may find Edit In> Merge to Panorama in Photoshop does a better job when you encounter stitching errors. This is especially true if some of the image files are over or underexposed because LR's Photo Merge> Panorma stiches the images using the raw image data. Edit In> Merge to Panorama in Photoshop creates TIFF copies of the image files with the LR settings applied. When you apply highlight and shadow recovery and perhaps some of the other Tone settings to the panorama file set it provides more tonal definition that helps to establish good control points. Just make sure to apply the same settings to all files in the set by using Sync or Copy & paste settings.

DC could you post back some of the lens settings / basic lens specs as I feel this can often inform the forum about the set of images taken in relation to the result in your post.

I'm thinking the "goldfish bowl" effect as you mention (if too pronounced) is unrecoveable.

Is you lens a prime lens?

Hi,

The lens is a Leica 24-60mm bundled with the GH5, which, because of its Micro Four Thirds system, effectively doubles everything.

I think I may have found a solution.  I just happen to have a tripod-mounted dolly track, and so am testing with shots at either end of the tracks, then sttitching in LR.  The results are pretty good, just need to do lots of tests to get a technique perfected.  Out of interest, David mentions the Perspective projection mode: what exactly is this in terms of its technical manipulations?

Thank you,

DC

Which release mode are you using?

Aperture Priority or Shutter Priority or Manual? . . .  or your cameras version of those?

In the Panoramic options, consider using Perspective projection mode, then aggressively using the boundary warp slider. It might give better results than Cylindrical or Spherical withou boundary warp.

Otherwise, go to Photoshop or a third party program.  (many of which do what you want)

Ok, some Panoramic technique documentation may help a lot, st least for future work.

Note that while you can accomplish some Pano work handheld, some support helps, a monopod can help some, a tripod can help more, and a tripod with some Panoramic gear attached will help big time.
