Help: Random Chromatic Strips Showing on Some Pictures

Community Beginner ,
Dec 31, 2020 Dec 31, 2020

Hardware: Intel NUC8

OS: Windows 10 2004

LR classic 9.4

Pictures captured by the same camera Nikon Z6. Some pictures showing random chromatic strips in both grid view and develop view, some not.

Sometimes when I stay in develop view for several seconds, the chromatic strips will go away, sometimes not.

Update:

The worse is that, when I tried to edit any pictures without chromatic stripes in develop view, chromatic stripes comes in less than 10 seconds. I cannot edit any pictures now.

I restart my computer. No luck.

This problemm does not happend before.

Windows build-in program "Photos" can show the picture correctly.

Please post your System Information as Lightroom Classic (LrC) reports it. In LrC click on Help, then System Info, then Copy. Paste that information into a reply. Please present all information from first line down to and including Plug-in Info. Info after Plug-in info can be cut as that is just so much dead space to us non-Techs.

"Intel(R) Iris(R) Plus Graphics 655 (27.20.100.8681)"

It looks you don't have the most recent graphics driver installed. Try updating to the most recent driver:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/140931/Intel-Iris-Plus-Graphics-655

If that doesn't help, then most likely you have a hardware problem. You should run hardware diagnostics.

"Windows build-in program "Photos" can show the picture correctly."

Windows Photos shows the JPEG preview embedded in the raw files, not the raw images themselves. It's often the case that hardware problems can cause glitches in LR's display of raw images, while the display of the embedded JPEG previews isn't affectedx.

Hi, thank you for your suggestions.

I downloaded the graphics driver. It shows an error message during installation: "A driver with the same version is already installed."

I checked installed driver version: Windows - Device Manager - Intel(R) Iris (R) Plus Graphics 655 - Properties - Driver, version = 27.20.100.8681

Leave it alone, it may be a bug of the driver installer.

Windows perf monitor reports no HW issue:

Perf Mon.png

I tried to open the .NEF file on my Mac. Both LR classic and macOS build-in "Preview" program show the random chromatic strips.

Screen Shot 2021-01-01 at 3.42.21 PM.png

I also tried to open it in Nikon Capture NX-D. The result is the same. See the RGB component values in the status bar of the snow: R 059, G198, B255. Blue component is 255. This is absolutely abnormal. I think the file is corrupted.

So frustrated. I captured these photos in freezing winds on high mountains.

This isn't the video card, note lens profile geometric correction on the stripes. This is file corruption, and file corruption is always caused by failing hardware.

Ifturning off the GPU does not solve the problem then the only other thing is can be is that those images are actually Corrupted.

It is caused by faulty hardware. Memory card, card reader, cable from card reader to computer, hard drive starting to fail or RAM problems. Or of course it could be the camera itself.

I think its time we ALL stopped wasting our time and the original poster's time by pointing them to the GPU driver for these type of "random chromatic strips" (or however they are described). There has never been, as far as I know, a case where this is the GPU or GPU driver causing this; these are always corrupted files.

I would agree that everything seems to point to corrupted files. This could be a bad SD card, a failing hard drive, a failing card reader, or any number of hardware issues. Not a fun or convenient issue to resolve, but one that must be identified by the user.

So the OP has a Nikon Z6.

How large are the embedded JPEG files in the NEF file?

Does someone have directions on extracting the embedded JPEG for use?

That way, maybe something can be recovered?

Hello, I reply to your previous 2 replies here.

It's easy to extract the preview image embedded in the RAW file:

exiftool.exe -b -PreviewImage _Z6I6559.NEF > preview.jpg

preview.jpg shows correctly.

I captured in RAW raw and small JPG at the same. The small JPG file is of 3024x2016. This somehow rescued part of my work.

Nikon has a single XQD slot. I think the XQD card reader is OK, because copying via the camera's USB port is the same.

Thank you everyone for your help. Now we all tend to believe that the RAW files are corrupted, and caused by failing hardware. I think the most suspicious hardware is the Nikon Z6 camera itself.

I captured these photos in freezing winds on high mountains. The temperature was below 0 Celsius. The low temperature made the camera screen stop working several times, and the battery was unable to charge.

Be careful with Nikon Z6. Photographers should use more professional devices in specific conditions.
