how to prevent LR 8 to be always on top

with all software on windows 10 that i work i'm able to permanently switch between applications, i just need to use alt+tab and i can easily open another application over the one i'm using. unfortunately on LR 8 i only can do this for a few minutes of use, then it stays always on top, to switches between applications i'm forced to minimize LR. i really hate this and i'm not being able to find a way to configure LR 8 to permanently accept to open other application over it. it's horrible! like almost everything else on LR 8.

i never had any problem using LR 6, it was like any other application, working perfectly all the time, but LR 8 is completely different than everything else i ever used in windows, including all other adobe software that i used in the last 20 years.

i was always able to configure and use all adobe applications, but with LR 8 i really need a lot of help. sometimes it feels like the thing is incompatible with windows 10, it's so weird.

I am using a Mac so I am not sure if Windows behaves the same.

It sounds like you may have Lightroom set up in Full Screen.

In the Window Menu, check to see if you can Exit Full Screen.

the problem is that I don't want to work on LR in a window, I really want (and need) to use it maximised.

in Windows it's possible to use any application maximised and still be able to open other applications on top. I only use Windows since 1991 but it has always been like this with all applications, including previous versions of LR.

with LR 8 it works well for a few minutes, then LR automatically turn always on top and I can't open any other application without minimizing LR.

that's a problem. and LR 8 seems to be the only software doing that.

for example: I can have any software maximised in Windows and still be able to open my browser and use it over a fully maximised window on the back. with LR 8 I can't, I need to minimise if I need to use the browser or even to change one music on Spotify. this is not usual on windows. not at all.

on windows when an application is always on top there's also an option to disable it. on LR I can't find any way to prevent it to be always on top when maximised.

basically, I need a way to use LR maximised but not always on top

Ok, I do not have that issue once LR has fully opened. When I start LR it keeps taking over the focus while I am working in other programs. But eventually that all stops.

For example, right now LR is full screen, but currently in the background as I type in this forum

So whats going on for your computer?, some possibilities

1. You have LR Classic CC set up to launch Import if a memory card is sensed..do you have a card in a card reader?

2. You have your OS setup to launch LR when a memory card or a just connected ext hard drive  is attached. (Windows Settings/Devices/Autoplay)

3. You have your OS Setup in Focus Assist to do something odd (Windows Settings/System/Focus Assist) On mine, its off.

One possible workaround, maximize LR, then shrink that down just a bit.

i don't like automatic things, so i always try to have everything disabled that might run automatically, but i'm going to double check everything.

anyway, when i start LR 8 it works pretty nice for a few minutes. i can use everything normally and fast, i can even use other applications on top. then after a few minutes working, everything gets insanely slow, drag and drop stops working and LR 8 stays always on top.

i know that closing it and opening again solves everything, but it's a total waste of time.

on photoshop i can work continuously for days with no problems at all even using all CPU and memory resources, but on LR 8 it only lasts a few minutes. as soon as LR 8 reaches about 30% of the hardware resources all kinds of problem starts.

I suspect this would come under "windows 10 lightroom steals focus"

Looking on the web via google, not looking so helpful

or perhaps search on just "lightroom steals focus"

searching that on this forum does not appear to show any answered discussions.

Please accomplish the following, it might provide a clue as to LR slowing to a crawl, or it may not.

In Lightroom, click on Help, click on System Information, click on Copy. And paste that into a reply.

Oh, and how is your Windows taskbar configured, always visible? That would give you another way to click on the program running you want up front.

yes, the taskbar is always visible, but it also doesn't work when LR 8 gets always on top.

i can open anything from the taskbar but everything opens in the background.

when LR 8 gets automatically on top, the only way to fix it is closing and opening LR again.

i did the lightroom reset yesterday, in the end it surprisingly updated the lightroom to build 1204643.

i have no idea if it fixed anything, because now the lightroom crashes and closes frequently when i try to drag and drop something.

my system has everything up to date, i don't have any other software with problems, and i don't even remember to have this kind of crashes in any application in the last 20 years.

i profoundly hate LR 8, is clearly the worst piece of software i ever used or the thing is not compatible with my system.

i'm going to try to move back to LR 6, it was the last stable version known of LR, and in time i think that it might be safer for me to start looking for an alternative to LR 6.

this is going nowhere. i never saw anything like this. photoshop is running perfectly, like any other software i have installed.

i quit.

So some new info

LR Classic CC Build 1204643

LR Classic CC version 8.2 (based on the build)

And from earlier System Information

Windows 10 Build 17134  (LR reports that as version, it sort of is, but really is the Build)

Windows 10 version 1803 (based on build 17134)

1) Ok, while Windows 10 v 1803 should be sufficient to work with Lightoom Classic CC v8.2, it is not sufficient to run the new Enhance Details feature. For that you need to update to Windows 10 version 1809 (Build 17763.316)

Now, updating Windows probably will not fix your problems. Sounds like you have some sort of hardware issue going on.

Also from your System Data

Graphics Processor Info:

DirectX: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 (25.21.14.1771)

2) Back on the 9th that was probably A-Ok, and not an issue, but just checked at Download Drivers | NVIDIA  and your driver (version 417.71) can now be updated to version 418.91 (dated yesterday).

I have no  idea if this will fix anything for your issues, I have no idea if this is a update due to the massive issues Adobe is having with Enhance Details (typically with much older GPU's)

Cool,

ohh, still stumbling on little clues via google, Now part if this one is a MAC related, but part us not. Both a reminder of a keyboard shortcut to minimize, and a setting mod (view option)

Pretty much out of ideas. One thing to consider, although probably not until Monday is to contact Adobe

FAQ: How do I contact Adobe Support?

Now in prep for that, perhaps add to what you have already stated, some screenshots. Pictures are worth a thousand words.

give a step by step itemized read thru of what you do, what happens, show what happens, what you attempt, what happens.......

heck, as you do that, and post in your discussion, perhaps a forum member will go agggg, I did not understand...perhaps I am attempting to answer the wrong question, etc.

When you contact Adobe, you could then provide this discussion as reference.

you might want to start the comment with nice bold words “HEY ADOBE HERE” but add a sentence like “To forum members, yes I understand Adobe does not normally read this forum, using this comment as a posting to reference in my chat with Adobe” (that will hopefully prevent a member from stating..thus is a Internet forum nit a support page...etc)

frig, too many words..
